Salt Lake City, Utah Phone Wasatch 5409 - SMOOT URGES CLEANUP Mr. Burton, what have you done in reducing taxes for the Senator Smoot did not return to this city to create any trouble but he has quite properly taken it upon himself as the Repub- people? Is it not a fact, Mr. Burton, that no matter what departlican party leader to do everything he can in his power to see that his party be kept clean from any and all political scandal. ment you are in, that you are the. most expensive commissioner Oftimes, politics is like unto an old house and springtime is anxiously awaited for for a general house cleaning. If trusted officials, elected by the people, fall by the way, then it is up to the people to see that a wrong be righted. Senator Smoot has demanded that there be a general cleanup and without doubt all Republicans back him up in his stand. No party can build its foundation upon political corruption and expect to stand intact. No matter how pure the seed may be, the farmer must weed his garden. If criminal charges are filed against a public official, it is the duty of the courts to try the case as soon as possible in all fairness to the official as well as to the people. Ever since a former Democratic mayor got in bad, who is reported to have been the dupe of others, rumors coming out of the City and County building have not been to the credit of many of our elected officials, and we believe that if all the facts were laid before the people, the whitewash brush would be tossed 4 4 into the tar barrel. It must also be remembered that a party which remains passive as regards the acts of any of its members must know that it will lose support. If the party refuses to act, the people will retalliate by a negative vote. It is quite true that a charge against an official is many times magnified by his opponents and oftimes manufactured and when sifted to the bottom is found to be only a myth. It must be remembered that scandal travels like wild fire, while the truth takes a snails pace. JrHowever, those proven guilty of crime should be given the full penalty of the law, for law and order is the only protection that society has. we have ever had? If you got results, we would not balk. Have you read the editorials in the Telegram the past few days? With all your bluffing what excuse can you give the tax payers for our present wide open city. This city has the name of being the most wide open city in the United States. Whisky is cheap and the gamblers are reaping a harvest, so the daily press tells us. Crime was never so plentiful as it is today and all the crooks in the country appear to be headed this way. This city has the name of being the distributing point for dope in the west, yet seldom is anyone caught, and then only by a government detective. We believe that every American should be quite satisfied with two terms in office. You may have done your best to serve the people, but the results are against you, and criminal conditions in this city are a very poor recommend for your return 4 4 to office. We honestly believe that a change will bring some relief to the people. LINDBERGH HERE TODAY When Colonel Chas. A. Lindbergh successfully navigated the air with his pal The Spirit of St. Louis flying across the p Atlantic ocean, and after making this long flight and making a perfect landing at the objective point near Paris, the people of this city little dreamed that this worlds hero of the air would honor us with a personal visit today. He will be accorded the biggest reception any man ever given in this state. The entire city has been decorated with flags and bunting and thousands of people have arrived in the city to see the conquering hero. It is estimated that between WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! thirty and fifty thousand out of town people are here. Hotels, rooming houses and restaurants are overcrowded as never be... Commissioner T .T. From what we have been able to find out about Mr. Burton, that hero worship is more to the fore than ever. ?vc do not believe that he ever gave away a penny. When he FLYING HEROES gave new pistols to the police officers, he really meant that he put his left hand into the pockets of the taxpayers, extracted a fortune, and' distributed it with his right hand, and now he Many of the flying heroes who are attempting to conquer claims all the honor while the bill is turned over to the over- the oceans by flights over them, are in reality digging wattery burdened taxpayer to piay. graves.
