Show THE CITIZEN TELEPHONE FACTS An average of ' 860,000 telephone calls a day are made In the city of Minneapolis. There are more telephones In the state of Virginia than in Mexico, the West Indies and Central America combined.' North America has about two-fiftof the world's total railway mileage and about two-thirof the worlds total telephone wide mileage. , Each minute of the day . and night during 1926 an average of over one and one-hal- f telephones were put' into service in the United States. Additions to telephone plant and equipment in the United States during 1926 entailed an. average expenditure of over $500 for every minute of the hs ds . year. New telephone wire was added to in the United the existing systems States during 1926 at an average rate of over ten miles a minute. Chicago will probably have a population of approximately 3,750,000 ten yeads hence, according to a survey made by the engineers of the Illinois Bell Telephone company. John McCormacks voice- delighted hundreds of listeners recently in London when he sang in the Royal Albert hall, the concert marking his first appearance in the International Celebrities Subscription series. On the same day his voice was also heard by Mrs. McCormack in New York. The tenor talked to her from London by radio telephone. His voice, always celebrated for its carrying quality, was transmitted clearly across the Atlantic. - the government forests must carry at least one shovel and one axe per automobile or per pack outfit, such equipment to be of a size and character suitable for fire fighting purposes. This order is effective beginning June 15, 1927 and will continue until further notice. The person in charge of a camping' or pack outfit party will be held responsible under federal laws for any violation of the order. The purpose of this new regulation is to further safeguard the 19,000,000 acres of national forests from damage and destruction resulting from unex-- ' tinguished camp fires. Many fires, re--1 ported to forest officers by motorists and campers, could be readily extinguished before they became of large size if the people discovering them were equipped with tools for fire fighting. One objective of the new order is to impress national forest visitors with their personal responsibility to not only extinguish their own fires, but also any fires that they find and can control. If people will do this there is less likelihood of their being called upon to fight large fires. No experienced woodsman or camper would ever think of going on a camping trip into the, mountains without a good shovel and axe. To properly make camp and secure materials with which to build a fire, one must have an axe, and no camp fire can be effectively extinguished, even after it has been drowned with water, without being well coveded with shovelsful of earth. A shovel is also absolutely necessary for camp sanitation and for the disposal of garbage and refuse that can not be burned. 11 hurled And "fired the shot heard round the . world.
