Not for many years has the Republican party been in such a precarious position politically as at the present time. The party is divided into factions and all want to rule. These factions are bigger than the party, evidently, and for several years the Republican office holders have been gradually eliminated from the most important offices of the state. We boast of a Republican state but all there is to it is talk. The governor of the state is a Democrat, which office politically is the big club on election day. The mayor of this city is a Democrat and the commissioner of public safety is a Democrat, holding control of the most important and influential department in the citv. Our sheriff of this countv is a Democrat, and v those versed in politics know that the sheriff has much influence at his command. Out of two United States senators, one is a Democrat. In summing up the entire situation, things look pretty much Democratic to us and unless a great many Republicans forget the yesterday and join hands today as a solid unit, otherwise we cannot see any victory ahead. The Democrats are all lit up with glee and they are praying that the past dissention will continue among the Republicans. Many blunders have been made during the past ten years. The trouble is that everybody wants to have a candidate and if you dont get behind that candidate you are looked upon as an enemy. The most essential thing in the Republican party at the present time is a state chairman that can bring the party factions together. We must not have a chainnan who himself is an office seeker because as such he is bound to work for his own interests at every opportunity. Wc must have a man that understands the political game and one who accepts the position to make , friends instead of enemies. scale in order that the peoples choice will be selected instead of some hand picked candidate that will take a big roll of money to populariz. We have had hand picked candidates for several years. The result is that we have Democrats in positions where Republicans could have been. FALLEN HEROES Within the past month we have had three primary elections for United States Senators and in each state the present dry world court senator has been overwhelmingly defeated and new men elected in place of formerly very popular men. When the United States senate endorsed the World Court, notwithstanding that the World Court constitution was shot full of holes with our amendments, the entire, nation was surprised. In two presidential elections the Democrats had been disastrously defeated upon such a platform, which the Republicans fought to a bitter end and why the change of heart is something nobody appears to understand. All we know is that our senators voted for the World Court, Republicans and Democrats alike. At the time, Senator Borah Republican and Senator Reed of Fissouri, Democratic, warned the senate that it was making a mistake. The world court senators are beginning to see the light. Three of their staunch supporters have taken the count and will probably never sit in the United States Senate again, being re' tired by request of the people. The first surprise came in Illinois when William B. McKinley, present senator, was defeated. This defeat was followed by Senator Pepper of Pennsylvania, and a few days ago Senator Robert N. Stanfield, of Oregon, was also counted among the also The selection of candidates must be made at the convention rans.
