Show THE CITIZEN 4 It is just as the English jurists have stated it is impossible ed commensurate with their crimes; when all holdups are given life in the penitentiary; when all connected with a murder are and not to be thought of. Cait we elect a Senator from Utah, or from any other state, with a set of reservations to be binding upon the United States hung, then and not till then will the present crime wave be checked Senate! You know we cant. Neither can we enter the World Court with reservations. The worlds court makes its own' reservations and what the mamilijority there decide will be enforced if it can assemble the tary power to do it. Even The Salt Lake Tribune, an ardent supporter of the League of Nations and the World Court, had to admit the other day in an editorial that something was wrong in Europe and that we must watch our step before casting our lot in the European political arena. to Japan is one nation that is patiently waiting for the timeimcome when we become members of the court. She has a little be migration controversy she wishes to settle with us and it will settled to their satisfaction, and to our dislike, at the proper time. Of course we could go to war. As the nation now stands we dictate our own policy, locally and abroad, but when we join the court all that will be changed; the court will then dictate. If not, what is the court for! We are told that the court is to stop all wars and to settle all international disputes. Surely the average American is not simple enough to believe that the court will do anything we want it to, but whatever the court wants to do it must secure our approval first. We would not insult the members of the World Court with such a thought. When a jury brings in a verdict of guilty the law provides the penalty, and the World Court is to be the highest authority on earth. Who will dare to question its action in any matter or its au1 thority! . CRIME COMMISSION And now we are going to have a national crime commission. Well, it will make a few more jobs and it will take phenominal minds to discover a solution if our present existing lax laws are to continue. To cure crime is to severely punish crime, but our laws, in a way, protect criminals, and like everything else, under protection, crime thrives. Bandits and murderers who fifty years ago were harshly dealt with, today are provided every luxury possible in our to penitentiaries, thus it is no punishment to send a person prison. In England it has oft been said, that the greater the man, the greater the crime, but in this country the reverse English is applied to the criminal. Here we find that the more a thief can steal the more he is looked up to and the harder it is to secure liis conviction. As a most excellent illustration, we have the case of Charles R. Forbes former director of the United States Veterans Bureau who lias been convicted of alleged embezzlement of funds in larg amounts and is sentenced to two years (!) in jail. The other day he visited Leavenworth federal prison, probably to see if he liked that prison well enough wherein to serve his time. The word embezzlement is kind heartedly substituted for the word thief. If lie is guilty of the crime alleged, he should at the very least serve twenty years in prison, and not as a trusty, but made to work hard every day, building good roads which the nation needs so badly, but under present laws he escapes a just penalty. If the members do not know the cause of so much crime in this country, it is because they have paid no attention to law enactment and enforcement, and therefore, such individuals are not competent to pass upon vital questions of the day. When the day comes that our criminals are justly punisli- - LIQUOR X Washington has finally agreed to have a hearing on the liquor question because some (!) of the members of congress are anxious to know how the people feel about the matter. They ought to know something about the liquor question when they appropriate millions of dollars for its enforcement and more millions are asked for and drinks are apparently not getting any scarcer. The expense bill to any business is generally the best key as to what is being done. Election is coming up this fall and many of the congressmen want to be on the right side of the fence when the voting is done, and it appears that prohibition will have much to do in Qq defeat and the. election of officers this fall. It looks like the whole nation is wet but the drys claim that they did not vote. That is bunkum. Most of the reformers never vote anyway, but if the drys are so positive as to their stand they should have come out in force and overwhelmingly defeated the wets, but it was not in the cards. The people have tired of the prohibition fiasco. Good men who will come out on a wet platform will defeat good men who will come out on a dry platform. As the saying is, Americans like to get their feet wet. Prohibition should never have been passed in this nation. But while the youth and strength of the nation was in the war, some of our mollycoddles took advantage of the situation and made the country dry as a war measure and we have had it ever since, along with the war taxes, although the war has been over for nearly eight years. What we need in this country is strict regulation like they have in Canada. Let the man that desires liquor go to a United States dispensary and make his purchase of pure liquor be that beer, wine or brandy. Then the government will be able to get the tax money which at present is going to foreign countries and to the bootleggers; the peoples taxes will be reduced and there will be a better feeling among the people. We will then stop breeding liars, perjurers and criminals. Let the person that appears on the street drunk be sentenced to the gravel pit, or rock quarry, for a term of six months at hard labor and immediate respect for the law will be accomplished. W7e have no room for drunkards and the best wav to reform habituals is to work them by making them break big rocks into little ones. No one should be given a permit to sell liquor. They would be in the business to make money and they would sell to anybody. Liquor should be dispensed by the government, and it shouid only be sold in small quantities and for legitimate purposes. But whatever you do, get out of the pernicious habit of preaching to your neighbor to make him better than yourself. Also remember to not make much noise about the mote that is in your brothers eye, when there is a beam in your own eye. RIGHT IS MIGHT. Whenever Mexican criminals are punished in this country there appears to be some retaliation against Americans residing in old Mexico, notwithstanding that the Americans have committed no crime. The foreigner is of the opinion that he must only be punished by his own people regardless of his crime, giving justice no consideration. We have had a little trouble with Mexicans lately and it may be only a coincidence that Americans have been ruthlessly murdered in Mexico soon after the happening here. Of course if each citizen remained in his own country tlggre would be no trouble, but it does seem rather unjust to compel a man to remain in his own country if he wishes to travel and go to another country. Our willingness to get along with everybody is one reason why America industry surpasses that of Eu- - |
