Show THE CITIZEN 4 nice profit for some one between that the retail price. With the big supply of gasoline in this country, there is no excuse for rai9 ing prices, except for profiteering purposes. If gasoline is getting scarce, it is the duty of congress to set that no gasoline be sent out of this country and that all fuel be conserved for the use of the people. It is too had we have so many people in this country who are of the almighty dolmoney mad and sacrifice their lives in quest lar which they store away in old age which at that time becomes dea mockery hecause it cannot purchase the pleasures that youth world when lights in, nor can one sou of it be taken away to the next we die. . TIMBER - Why is it that Utah is making no apparent effort in reforesting its timber lands? Oregon, the largest timber state of the Union with more than 40,000,000,000 feet of standing timber at the present time, .is making big strides in replanting its cut lands, but here in Utah we are sleeping on the job. Several other states are making big advances in this direction. There should be a large acreage planted every year. While we should posmay never grow sufficient for the local demand, yet we sess enough timber for emergency purposes, as well as be able to hold down prices of the trusts. The timber trust has filched millions of unearned dollars for lumber from the people, as will be shown by a comparison of the sawmill costs compared with the retailed article. MILTON D. JOSEPH Milton D. Joseph had his liberty abridged for about two and a half years, but while serving this time in the state penitentiary he had the satisfaction of knowing that he was $45,000 ahead of the game. He was charged and convicted for embezzling $55,000 from the Continental National Bank several years ago. He temporarily escaped with the money and was finally located in Florida. He was convicted and sentenced January 3, 1923. misde. On the face of it, it must be considered only a trifling meanor to take such a large amount, and the light punishment is only an incentive for others to follow in Josephs footsteps. There are thousands of people in this country who would be willing to serve that length of time for half that amount of money. The light prison penalties and a kind hearted pardons board is probably responsible for the present crime wave we have had in this city for the past year, and still going strong. PATRIOTISM. Henry Ford says that .Americans are probably the worst mis users of the term Patriotism because so few of them know how much their freedom cost, how it is preserved, how it surpasses what other people have. Waving the American flag and exploiting the American people is not patriotism. Raising the national anthem and lowering the wages of the workers is not patriotism. It is the most subtle and effective form of treason. Nations are undermined fro?! within by forces that pretend to be patriotic when they are only parasitic. We need erononiic patriotism, as well as political. ... POLITICIANS. legislators of the past legislature will step out as candidates for city commissioned this fall. There has been so much dissatisfaction in the way municipal affairs have been handled that many of the aspiring ones can see an easy election for themselves. . Tlie people will probably ask at this election, What have, you done that you ask for our support, and what is your program? It is reported that some of the kid We have a city full of gamblers, bootleggers and crimj. Why have they been allowed to stop here and live so freely? Is the underworld strong enough to defeat the will of people this fall? Wait --we shall see. , GAS VS. SMOKE It is predicted that America will be the first nation to d smoke, soot and ashes by using gas fuel instead of solid heating processes in shops and factories. It will be first to U home heated by gas, thermostatically controlled. The increasing use of gas is an inevitable result of demands for comfort and eficiency, to which must be added the. ing conviction that, human life and property are suffering y culable damage from the smoke evil. Th progress of fuel conservation depends upon the pn of gas utilization. The public is beginning to see this truth accordingly. The gas industry has grown because it has saw labor, and money for the public. Smoke commissions can never solve the smoke nuisanct and electricity will solve the problem. The smoke commissions an excuse for a political machine which helps increase the people burdens. POLITICS The political situation is beginning to warm up, not only la but nationally as well. Benjamin C. Marsh, executive secretary Peoples Reconstructive league, has arrived in the city to forces to make a fight against Senator Reed Smoot of Utah, the arguments put forth by Mr. Marsh is that one per cent of the national income, people received about per cent of the people own about half of the national wealth. He is also against the present high tarif on manufactured and claims that people receiving less than $2,000 per year pi major portion of all the internal revenue taxes on tabocco, and clubs and automobiles and parts. Mr. Marsh has worked up considerable interest here how far he will be able to go in inducing people to see hisvit not probably be known until election time. iTh one-sevent- h leg In ll WHITE HOUSE Just before President Coolidge left Washington for Swi he gave orders that, despite the fact the White House was ing some repairs, as much of the building as possible be kepi to visitors in order that they might see the home of the Presii This thoughtful action of Mr. Coolidge will enable thoi tourists who can only secure a vacation during the months of J August an opportunity to visit the home of the Chief Exi the nation.
