Near the south end of the property on the 1300 level, two high grade r ore bodies were discovered. The average value of the ore taken out here in one mopth showed .08 ounces gold, 65.51 ounces silver, 24.20 per cent lead and .56 per cent copper. These ore bodies are now being developed from the Eagle 1350 level, 235 feet below and the outlook is very promising. At the Eagle & Blue Bell large blocks of ground remain to be developed within the ore zone. At the American Star, steady shipments of ore are maintained, showing a small profit for the mine and most of the money is used in the further development of the property. Shareholders of the Eagle & Blue Bell have received in dividends and of the Bingham Mines company, $707,500, $32,500 having been paid in January of this year. James P. Graves is president; Henry N. The Emma Silver mine is at present entered through the Tom Moore tunnel, a straight bore extending some thousands of feet into the north wall of Little Cottonwood canyon. The disfeatures of the principal geological trict extend roughly from east to west, hence this tunnel cuts through an array of formations as would be difficult to find elsewhere in so short a distance. Some thousands of feet from the portal we came upon a striking irregularity in the rock on either side of This was the tunnel. crack or fault, which breaks through the roof of the tunnel slants downward across the walls and within a short distance disappears under the floor. Where the rock has broken away exposing the inner surfaces of the fault is smooth and polished indicating that one immense mass has actually shifted upon the other. This is in fact the case, and the fault is known as the Snow fault, one of the outstanding geological features of the district. From a length of board cut three square pieces and place one on top Through the the other, flatwise. three thicknesses bore a hole and fill the hole with putty. The three pieces of wood then represent three layers of limestone; the hole filled with putty the original Emma ore deposit.- Now shift the blocks slightly so that the edges form a sort of stairway. The mass of putty Is thereby cut in three sections, a portion remaining in the hole in each block. In a similar way, the original Emma ore deposit was cut in three sections, by slipping of different layers of the earths crust one on the other. The well-define- d - putty in the middle block represents the ore which was mined fifty years ago. The putty in the lower block represents the ore mined in comparatively recent years from the deepest workings of the mine, where water eventually put an end to operations. The putty in the topmost block represents the lost Emma ored eposit for which an intensive search is now being made. ALTA MERGER MINES CO COMING TO THE FRONT At the property of the Alta Merger Mines Co., which is located in the Alta Ore Zone, and occupies the greater portion of the south side of Little Cottonwood Canyon, at Alta, during the past year there was driven 600 feet of raises and 700 feet of drifts and cross-cut- s for the purpose of exploration. There was mined 4,058,704 pounds of ore, of a gross value (less smelting charges) of $61,510.18, giving the company a net return after deductand ing smelting transportation 15. ore carried The charges, $44,432. values in silver, lead) gold, copper, bismuth and iron. The ore came from what is characterized as the Gold Zone stope. Five other high grade ore bodies are known and proved to be going down strong below the Dwyer tunnel level, and will be reached by a lower tunnel as soon as possible. The Company has 1,700,000 shares of stock issued and outstanding. Col. Geo. II. Watson and General Manager. COMBINED METALS REDUCTION COMPANY. The Combined Metals Deduction company organized for the purpose of handling ores from the Stockton properties and from the mines of Ploche, controlled by Willard F. Snyder and associates, took over the mill property of the old Honorine, at station Buehl, just above Stockton. The purpose was to make profitable recoveries of the lead and zinc contents of the ores. Equipment for a total tonnage of 300 tons per day has been installed, and BB S gan and Alta Merger. properties make these purchases that we know of. GEO. 1 es The history of the pioneers and the history of western mining are so closely interwoven that one cannot speak of the one without at least occasional reference to the other. It is true that there was always the first settler who through deliberate effort (though oftener through sheer good fortune) made the initial discovery of precious metals, the numbers that followed were spurred on by the promise of wealth that came by pick and shovel, cradle and wheelbarrow. We have had occasion, and warranted occasion, to read much of the Emma mine, for it was on the property of the present' Emma Silver Mines Company, that almost the first discovery of metallic ores was said to have been made by pioneers in Salt Lake Valley. To follow the mottled career of this remarkable mine through the fifty odd years since it wras discovered, is but to follow in the Vellworn path of many another writer on the subject.
