Lecturer: And w ausc he is an as Nephi Utah has about 148 miles of unbroken paved road extending from Brigham City to Nephi, along which highway there is much picturesque scenery. Brigham City is situated in the heart of the peach orchards of Utah. It is about 60 miles north of Salt Lake City. Nephi is about 90 miles south of Salt Lake City and is about the center of the sheep and cattle industry of the state. After leaving Brigham City, the tourist finds a high mountain range to the east of the paved highway and on the west there is. the Great Salt Lake, with its famous resort, Saltair Beach, extending the entire distance from Brigham City to Salt Lake City. Before reaching Ogden, the tourist comes to the famous Hot Springs resort which is noted for its medicinal water and bathing, and then we roll into Ogden, one of the most important railway and manufacturing centers of the state. We next come to Farmington, a thriving settlement in the heart of a fertile valley, where much of Utahs truck farming is conducted. The famous Lagoon refeort is situated at this point which is noted for its fresh water bathing and its beautiful lawn covered grounds where flowers and shade trees are inviting during the hot summer days encountered in the larger cities. We then come to Salt Lake City, Utahs capital, the city of Mormon temples and church buldiings and headquarters for Mormon officials. East of the city is the Wasatch range which is pierced by many beautiful and scenic canyons down which flow clear streams of water, and in former days where trout fishing was ideal. West of the city is Saltair beach, the big Utah Copper smelters and Bingham, a mining camp where one of the largest copper mines of the world takes out millions of tons of copper. This company is moving an entire mountain with steam shovels. on Going south from Salt Lake City the paved highway the tourist drve3i through Murray, a smelter town where much of the silver and lead ores of Utah are treated and shaped into bullion. Passing on we come to Lehi, American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Provo, a fertile valley where prosperous farmers raise farm products for the market. Immediately leaving Salt Lake City after turning the point of the mountain which is shown in the cut herewith, Timpanogos, the highest mountain peak in Utah, appears in view. At its foot is Provo, the largest city of Utah county, and Ironton, a few miles below where the largest steel plant in the west is located. American Fork canyon, the wonder canyon of Utah, and the famous Timpanogos cave, where wonderful water formations can be seen and which is located only a few miles east of American Fork. Passing on the tourist comes to Spanish Fork and to Nephi, traveling through a farming and grazing country with prosperous farmers living along the road all the way. This paved highway taps the nteM nal heart of population of the state. Most of it is a concrete cement paved highway which affords easy driving. There is without doubt more natural scenery along this 148 miles of highway than can be seen anywhere in the country along the same distance. It is a road that the people of Utah may well be proud of. HARDINGS TOMB. Clara J. Fagergren. Eight hundred thousand dollars will be spent to erect a memorial for Warren G. Harding on the outskirts of Marion, Ohio. That much money would provide funds to build 400 homes at $2,000 for needy widows right here in the United States. There are thousands of hardworking, needy widows rearing families and worrying where the next months rent is coming from. The gift of a home would lighten the biggest load of their burden, for, after all, shelter is the greatest problem of the poor. $800,000 would erect 80 orphans homes at $10,000 each. Many of the institutions now giving shelter to homeless waifs lack the cheerful aspect of a real home. Think of the Joy that big sum of money would give if spent on hungry little children. If Mr. Harding could have his choice he would doubtless prefer to perpetuate his memory in the hearts of. grateful childien rather than have hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on a marble shaft in his honor. Again, that vast sum of money would build 16 maternity hosptials in the country districts at $50,000 each. How many rural districts can boast having a sanitary and quiet place where prospective mothers can go in safety? The future generation depends on the babies of today, and yet, the cost of sending mothers from the Before Buying a car get our prices Agent for The FLINT The STAR The DURANT Emil Carlson, 4889 So.
