It was a day of mourning for our dead comrades and a day of worship and thanksgiving to the memory of the dear loved ones who bravely went to the front and laid down their lives that we might live. The graves of the soldiers were decorated with beautiful flowers and a United States flag marked the headstone of every hero. Thousands of people visited the cemeteries and were present during the impressivie memorial services. It was a grand day of worship' in which the entire citizenship took part. Memorial day has come to be looked upon as a day of worship instead of celebration as of the past. The usual noisy athletic celebrations and parades were missing. It was a day of rest and prayer. May it ever be thus. While the Europeans are free-for-a- getting ready for another big war, may come sooner than we expect, certain forces are at work i this We have the capital and country to make us a re have the men. Why, then, should we stay out of the fight if here is another? We financed the World war and we are not all foke yet. Money had little or no value during the war. It was asy to make money and it went easy. The ordinary working men rore ten dollar silk shirts and rode to their, work in automobiles. ttvas fine for the boys at home while it lasted, but it was hfor boys who went over there. When Jack Dempsey fights, we build a big stadium and charge prices to see the battle. The next time the Europeans stage a fight they ought to charge ss admission and they would be able to sell all standing room, fowever, the fight ought to be to a finish. A draw never looks d, even on the battlefield. It cost us over $11,000,000,000 to see "e last European fight, not counting the billions it took on this side keep peace in the family, and we added another four billion last ek to be distributed among the boys who went over to see the jtfit and who came back with empty pockets. Generally, to the 'dor belongs the spoils, but from indications there were no spoils, "d if there was any money wagered on the fight the stakeholder IUst have taken it all, because our boys came back broke. Before we talk about joining a league of nations, before we talk a world court, would it not be better to secure a settlement from tal) France. and Belgium? So far they have not even paid us st on borrowed money, not counting our great sacrifice in saving necks from the German yoke. It has even been hinted that they 'll never pay us. We care not to annex territory of other peoples. We are satisfied just as we are. Then why should we join hands with Turkey, for instance, to stop Armenia from gaining her independence. Can we afford to join hands with any nation to help hold obstinate colonies under subjection? Why has there been such a great effort made by European nations to get us tied up in some sort of a league or court? Europes biggest men have toured this country for that purpose. George Washington, warrior, statesman, president and father of our country, warned his people to keep out of the political affairs of Europe. We shall rue the day when we fail to heed this great Americans advice. Having failed in every effort to inveigle us in their political broils, the propaganda has been shifted among the women and efforts are now being made to make each party put a world court pledge in their platform so that the people have no say in the matter. Four years ago the Democratic party put the league in their platform and the people overwhelmingly repudiated it. Who is paying for all this European propaganda? If Europe is in earnest in eliminating war why docs she not eliminate the thing that makes war and institute the of all nations. India wants her freedom. England wants us in a league or world court to hold India. Armenia wants her freedom but Turkey is obstinate with the saber at the slaves throat. If we join with the dominating nations of Europe to force the present rule over slave nations, then we ought to repudiate our own government, admit that we made a mistake when the Revolutionary war was fought, and return to England on our bended knee and ask her forgiveness. Americans fought for freedom and they won. It made George Washington a great man. Had America lost that war, George Washington would have been branded in history as a traitor to the English nation. of all people If Europe is willing to allow the now under subjection and who arc anxious to govern themselves, a league or court would be a success, but under such conditions we would need no league or court. Everybody who visits Europe gains the opinion that there surely will be another war. That is why the European politician is working so hard to get us in at this time that when war does start our boys will begin marching to Europe at the word. Is not our experience in the World war sufficient for this self-determinat- self-determinat- i ion ion ) i |
