They talk as if the Utah champion is a hothouse plant who needs a great deal of nursing and woh cannot be taken out of doors (out of the state) to wrestle. But Dern has fooled them and he has gone to Portland to show up those guys in their true light. In one of the Portland' papers we read: Dern, rated as one of the greatest grapplers of the day, has one peculiarity that other athletes of his profession do not possess. Ever since he took to wrestling Dern has been troubled with ohmesickness. His fear of being stricken with this ailment has kept him well within the city limits of dear old Salt Lake. Once in a while he would take a match in one of the smaller towns of Utah, but seldom has there been an attraction that would lure him outside the state. Now, however, the local fans are beginning to talk and they say that Mike Yokel has made a sprinter out of Dern and that he has run out of the state to get away from Mike Yokel. You cannot stop talk, especially of this wrestling game. The Salt Lake Telegram offered a purse of $1,000 for a match between Yokel and Dern, requiring a $250 for good faith. Yokel put his money on the line instantly, but Dern said he had so many matches contracted ahead that he could not accept the proposition. This explanation is not well received by the wrestling fans who have now started .clipping bureaus in order to check Derns wrestling itinerary. They ask, "When has Dern pulled down $1,000 for a wrestling match? The Telegram offered the $1,000 to the winner. Did Dern fear he could not win? Dern has defeated Yokel in the last two matches. Why cant he do it again and take the money? Yokel now claims that Dern is afraid of him and will not wrestle, and thats the real hitch in the game. Was Yokel sick when Dern defeated him heretofore? To hear the fans talk about these two mat gladiators would make an interesting story. Yokel says he will take on Strangler Lewis if some one will hang up a purse for the match. Yokel has the blues because Dern refused the Telegrams offer, but if the champion Is filled with dates he cannot do the possible. Dern has left the state and he will not return before the holidays. Mike Yokel also has a schedule of wrestling dates. It certainly would be a Joke if some promoter would match these two men outside of the state, neither knowing whom he was to meet. Every year we read where the farmers pay out large amounts to combat pests which destroy crops, and yet e farmers go out and kill these the animals which help keep the pests under control. We will first take the case of the much feared and despised skunk. The average person is inclined to believe that the skunk is a predatory animal which lives in the barnyard, eating the farmers chickens, but as a rule he keeps pretty well out of reach of the farmhouse. We have two species of skunk in this country. The spotted skunk, which does not kill poutlry and which is a smaller animal than the ordinary skunk known as the polecat, which is about the size of a cat. The spotted skunk is found in the southwest part of the United States and ranges in some parts of Utah. This anfmal is very seldom seen, as it uses the darkness to keep itself hid and also to easier secure its food. This little animal lives principally upon insects, grasshoppers, beetles, mice and rats. A nest of eggs is a luxury and this sicunk will also take small birds which may be surprised in their nights sleep. A barn in which there. are many mice or rats makes a favorable home for the spotted skunk, but of course its smell is obnoxious to the owner. The animal makes its home in any suitable place, such as a hollow tree or among the rocks. The northern skunk, which is much larger and less handsome, plays. havoc with a farmers hen house if it once takes a notion to go in, but like its smaller cousin its chief food consists of mice, rats, grasshoppers, beetles and. If every farmer knew the value of the skunk it would receive unlimited protection on his farm, and it would never be killed unless it was at a time when the fur was prime and part of the animals were killed for the price of their furs.
