THE GREAT OUTDOORS I ' Parley Li. Williams is an attorney retired from service and he is simply sawing wood and visiting all 'his friends. If they all vote for him and he can get to see them all before election, it is generally conceded that his election will he nearly unanimous. George N. Lawrence has put on the harness and is rounding up all his friends and when he starts the drive to the polls on November 6 there will not be much left for the other fellows. Lawrence knows all the angles of the political game and the other politicians are not going to beat him out of any votes which rightfully belong to him. We hear little of Judge W. W. Arm- strong hut he has many friends working all over the city and it would not be surprising to see the judge qualify for mayor, which office he seeks in the commission. Still water runs deep and the other boys in the race had better riot underrate the judge. A few entry blanks Whos next? left. Lets make it a real boss race. Berkeley Olson, former county recorder, and now financial secretary of Jack Dempseys coal mine interests, has announced his candidacy for city commissioner, to run on the Progressive ticket with J. E. Darmer and A. E. Harvey. E. Hugh Miller, who was announced as a Progressive candidate and who later withdrew from the race, left this vacancy which has now been filled by the selection of Mr. Olson. Olson has a great many friends in this city and he will be rated as one of the vote getting candidates. He was forced into the limelight yesterday by his numerous friends and his coat is off for the battle. The first meeting of the season of the Young Mens Republican club was held at the Utah hotel and a large crowd of enthusiastic citizens was present. Congressman E. 0. Leatherwood and Judge F. W. Crockett were among the speakers. President 0. R. Dib-ble- e of the Young Mens Republican club, presided at the meeting. A musical program was furnished by Sandy organizations. . CONTRADICTED. OPENS NEXT MONDAY. . Plenty of Ducks for the Hunter Shoot at; Bingley After to If you want to shoot out of a sneak boat or sink box you must see Dave Madsen and he will give you the necessary instructions. Remember, how- ever, not to forget your, pick and and other paraphernalia necessary to bury yourself below the level of the lake when attempting this sink box business. Also secure a rubber suit for mud and water protection. . shovel, bailing bucket, The Fish and Game department has declared war upon all ducks, geese, swan, snipe, plover, wil-letcurlew, godwits, avocets and mudhens that may be found within the ' boundary lines of Utah, the opening shot to be fired upon an agreed time, one-hahour before sunrise next Monday morning, October 1. General orders have been sent out for the hunters to assemble in limited numbers at the duck sloughs. They are to build their blinds so that the flying enemy cannot detect the hunters and when the ducks come within a range of from thirty to fifty yards the hunter shall shoot to kill, but after he has ducks he knocked down twenty-fiv- e must retire for the day. This will give the generals of the duck armies time to reassemble their scattered forces. If the armies of ducks still persist to invade the territory of the white man he may go out the next more of the day and kill twenty-fiv- e enemy, and he may repeat his attack upon the ducks and other aquatic and upland birds named herewith every day until the close of the season, December 31, when both sides shall agree upon an armistice until October 1, 1924, unless otherwise provided by the selfish hunter who names all the terms of peace and war. A sportsman will not shoot at ducks w'hich are so far distant that he only wounds them. Ducks should be allowed to come in range or not shoot at and it must be remembered that the majority of the ducks killed are at a range of about thirty yards. Occasionally we hear of shooters who kill at 100 yards, but in a majority of such cases the eyesight of the hunter ought to be tested for eye defection. There appear to be a great many ducks in the sloughs this year, and the hunters who belong to clubs will get the cream of the shooting and probably most of them will get their limit of 25 birds. Dont come In with fifty ducks the opening day, and if you do, evade Bill Bingley, because he is on the job. He is collecting all extra birds as well as taking in all persons who are found with more than the specified number. It is also well to remember that the law reads that shootf hour before ing must cease sunset. This gives the surviving ducks time to eat their evening dinner before dark. No hunter shall kill more than 15 Wilson snipe in any one day. The duck season Is longer in Washington, Kane, Grand, Emery, Uinta, San Juan, Iron, Beaver, and Millard counties, where the season closes January 15. It appears to many hunters that if the duck season is open in Uinta county until January 15, it should be open to that date in ail counties. sand-piper- s, s, ! tow-boa-t, JACK DEMPSEY. lf one-hal- Jack Dempsey was with us during the week and he looks prosperous. The champion just hooked nearly half a million dollars when he knocked Luis Angel Firpo for a goal of ten in the second round of their championship fight. Dempsey has no immediate fights in sight and says that he will probably not enter the ring until next year. He is willing to give Firpo another chance at the title. In the meantime, the champion may enter the movie game or take to the stage. He has left for Los Angeles where, no doubt, he will make some theatrical connection before he returns to this city.
