At the present' time people are talking vacation and not stock buying and business in' general suffers. But a good foundation is being laid for the coming fall and winter business. Everybody is working and all are receiving good wages and salaries and there will be plenty of money for small as well as large investments. The metal market is going a trifle stronger. Lead has hit the 6 cent mark, but is again going an unward course. Silver is down several points from where it stood last spring but the mining men have hopes for silver which is to receive special attention from Congress. The western session of the senate gold and silver inquiry commission which is scheduled to meet at Reno, Nevada, September 4. Matters vital to mining men of both North' and South America will be discussed and it will be the biggest silver meeting ever held in the history of the world. to the city from-thei- r . , POTASH RETURNS The interior department announces that returns received by the geological survey, from the producers potash in the United States, indicate that the output in 1922 amounted to 25,176 short tons of crude potash salts containing 11,714 short tons of actual potash (H303. The sales amounted to 22,028 short tons of crude potash containing 11,313 tons of (K20) valued at $463,512. About 30,000 short tons, of crude potash were held by the producers December 31, 1922. the price of crudes which reached a maximum late in 1920 and early in 1921.. In 1921 the general business depression greatly decreased the demand for asbestos and prices fell continuously throughout the year. In 1922 the plight of the Arizona miners was made worse by a further decrease in prices, due in part to keen competition with chrysotile.from Rhodesia. The prices of crudes during the last five months have been remarkably constant, No.- 1 Canadian being quoted at $500 and No. 2 at an average of about $290. Each of these prices is about 80 per cent figures. higher than the pre-w- ar PAINT PIGMENT The sales of barytes mined in the United States in 1922 amounted to 155,000 short tons, more than twice as much as in 1921 and about 75 per cent' of the average yearly sales for 1916 to 1920. The total value of the domestic barytes sold in 1922 was $1,123,950, an average of $7.25 a ton. Barytes is a heavy white mineral that enters extensively into modern paint manufacture. An inferior grade of pigments is made from it by grinding it so fine that its powder can be floated on water. A better grade of pigment is made by chemical treatment, and a superior grade by making chemically a mixed zinc and barium pigment. Thousands of oil companies are operating in the recently opened California fields around Santa Fe Springs, Long Beach and Huntington Beach. As a protection against any fraudulent type of promotion, that may be at- tempting to operate, California maintains a Corporation Comission, which has done excellent work in curbing what otherwise probably would have become a more serious situation, similar to the losses sustained in the Oklahoma and Texas oil booms through the deliberate fraudulent operations of promoters over whom little control could be exercised because of a lack of state regulation. The federal government likewise has detailed a staff of postoffice inspectors to the California fields to expose and prosecute any promoters who may have misused the mails in the sale of oil stock. Through these state and federal agencies, the public has the opportunity to lodge its The office of the Corporation Com-- . mission, of California to which such complaints should be addressed Is located at Los Angeles land the Postof-fic- e Inspectors headquarters also are at Los Angeles. About the only re-- ,, quirement is that complaints must set out the facts in detail and be accom- -' panied by advertising literature and correspondence.
