In selecting this bird Madsen made no mistake. The partridge adapts itself to almost any climate and can go through severe winters without any loss. It is a good game bird and one that breeds very fast. Texas was one of the first states to import the partridge and about fifteen years ago' Pennsylvania imported several thousand and at the end of a three year closed season there were enough birds to give most of the gunners their limit of twelve each. Several counties in Canada report gieat success. . We have many ideal localities where the partridge will do well and with careful supervision of the four hundred birds imported it will not be long before the boys can be turned loose on them. The farmers ought to take kindly to this bird because it is death to grasshoppers, and a goodly number of the partridges in any one locality will keep the grasshopper pest down to a minimum. Stop at Springville. Those who are interested in game birds should stop at the Springville hatchery, when going that way and see what the state is doing in raising big trout spawners and game birds. With an increased supply every year it will not be long before we all may have ; ideal . field shooting of quail, pheasants and grouse. There is one important matter which Commissioner Madsen should not overlook this spring after irrigation waters have been turned off, especially in the Bear river country in the vicinity of the great Salt lake. Since 1910 millions of ducks have died there and at the mouth of the Jordan river and some effort ought to be made to drain some of the stagnant ponds which are left because of the low water. The ducks gather around these pools of contaminated water to nest and the water gets vrorse every day and more deadly to the young ducks as well as the old. All stagnant water on duck club grounds should be drained by the members of the clubs. If this is done we will have better shooting the ing fall. If it is let go as it has been in the past, shooting will be worse the coming year than it wast last year, which was the poorest shooting season in the .history of this state. A majority of the clubs had absolutely no shooting, and it will get worse unless something is done to control the present duck disease which is ex- -' terminating the ducks by the millions. , There are some parties who are agitating the closing of Parleys canyon to fishermen, claim being made that the water is polluted and the blame is laid to the fishermen. Mayor Neslen says that many complaints have come to him of stream pollution but of course he does not know who is guilty but qualifies his statement by saying that the waterworks department would like to catch the parties. As a matter of fact the fishermen are all residents of the city and they drink the water and they are very careful. Here and there some campers become very careless by throwing table scraps, tin cans, and whatnot, and even washing their clothes in the stream. These are campers and not fishermen and it would be a great injustice to close that stream which has been fished from 1847 to the present time, and it is the only stream where the people who do not possess an automobile can fish. What the city commission should do is to pass an ordinance creating a big fine and a jail sentence and by offering a reward for all offenders. Six months in jail to think over the matter and a fine of $100 or $200 would soon put a stop to those who have no respect for themselves or any one else. We have two fishermen on the board of city commissioners Herman H. Green and Dr. M. It. Stewart, and these two men know by experience that ordinary fishing in a stream does not pollute the water, and they also know from association with the average fisherman that he is a gentleman. The Salt Lake County Sportsmens with the association should mayor and help run down all violators of the law and aid in bringing them to justice. co-opera- te V opening game at Fresno and arrive here with the Bees for the opening game in this city. Sometimes a man can get away with the policy of being "all things to all men, but he cant fool the women. FROGS VS. MAN. How old are you, miss? "I have seen four and twenty summers. And how many years were you blind? .. - There is a frog in Santo Domingo which throws out poison gas. It weighs ten pounds and its feet resemble the tentacles of an octopus. The frog perspires a milky fluid which blisters like a mild carbolic acid solution and fills the air with a blinding vapor and an intolerable odor. Nature has so equipped the frog to protect itself against its enemies, the snakes. In a neighboring forest on the same island dwells another species of frog. It barks like a dog, and one of them caught by members of the American Museum of History expedition squealed loudly like a pig when it was NOTICE Pratt Beet Principal place City, Utah.
