West Branch is accredited with a population of 637. On August 10, 1874, young Hoover came into the world and was named Herbert Clark. His parents were Quakers. In fact, West Branch was, and is, a Quaker At Leland Stanford the young man, only a boy still, was hard put to it for funds. He tried a waiters job, but it didnt appeal to him, and with the initiative that he has carried through life he carved out a job for himself. He got an appointment as agent for a laundry on commission and saw that other students' clothes were cared for carrying the laundry bags back and forth. Later he got other work to do, as is evidenced by a report made in 1893 by hfs guardian on file in the court records of the Iowa county town as follows: "Herbert has made very good progress in his studies in vacation, and was credited by the faculty with six months university work. He made $65 a month assisting with a geological survey of Arkansas. In 1895 Hoover was graduated as a mining engineer, cum laude. He was then 21. He is now, among other things, a trustee of Leland Stanford. It is said that the boys ambition to become a mining engineer was influenced by the current stories of the wonderful success and adventures of John Hays Hammond. Certain it is that despite his Quaker blood and training the call of the wild has always appealed to Hoover. Immediately after leaving college he went into the drifts as a miner at a wage of $2 a day. A year later he sailed for Australia as fourth assistant engineer for a mining group, taking his bride with him. From then on his career was kaleidoscopic. He became independent in Australia by applying modern processes of reduction to an oldfash-ione- d gold mine, having interested a capitalist in his ideas. Attention drawn to him, he became chief engineer of the Chinese Exploration Com pany, in which place he prospered, until, .when he was 26, he had become the expert of the North China government, chief engineer of the Imperial Bureau of Mines. The Boxer rebellion knocked this precious fortune Hooover. flat, but didnt discourage After the lifting of the siege of Tientsin he joied the correspondents, and following the allied army into Pekin. Mrs. Hoover was a California girl, Miss Lou Henry of Monterey. She was a co-e- d of Leland Stanford when young Hoover was working his way through that instittuion. She is spoken of as a woman of much character, energetic and industrious, and, naturally, frugal. Herbert Hoover, from whom was derived the verb Hooverize, didnt lack early training in that line. Young Hoover went the barefooted way of the other village boys, did the chores, went to school and led the customary life' of the ordinary healthy American country boy. Then both parents died when he was still a youngster. The estate consisted of a house and lot valued at $1,000 for the three children Herbert had a little brother and sister. The money was realized for the purpose of the education of the children. d That was Hoover's patrimony of $1,000 and that held in trust. The family was separated, Herbert going to live with an uncle in Salem, Oregon, who cared for him without charge while he was getting more schooling. This uncle was something of a prophet, for it is on record that in 1889, when Herbert was 15, he applied to the court in Iowa for $60 from the boys legacy to enable him to attend a business college. In doing so the guardian wrote: "I think if Herbert had this scholarship he would make use of it and get full benefit from it. Herbert did. Three years later he was working in a real estate one-thir- office, Arrive Salt Lake City self-supportin- g. It was then he decided to keep on moving.
