'TpLsimply FRANKLIN SPEED STUNT 972 miles in twenty-fou- r hours and forty-si- x minutes is a '.remarkable demonstration of an automobiles ability to cover great in a day. Everyone agrees that it is a remarkable performance even if- every condition such as roads and weather had been ideal. But conditions were not. Betvreen Boston and Fort Kent, Maine, one of the most northerly points in the United States, are roads so noted for their ruts and ice in Traversing dis-stanc- es - winter that general tourist travel ceases after the middle of each September. A stock Franklin touring car accomplished this wonderful record in the latter part of December, and P. E. Frost of Portland, Maine, and Haven Sawyer and W. McC. Sawyer, of Bangor, Maine, were the drivers. The car used was an ordinary stock model that had already undergone many hardships and was not overhauled in preparation for this particular test. In fact, the men were on their way within forty-eighours after they were requested to make the drive. Between Boston and Houlton, Maine, the drivers averaged 41.5 miles per hour, a record considered unapproachable under any conditions with any other car than a Franklin. Between Houlton and Fort Kent, the roads were so blocked with snow and drifts that the drivers wTere forced in instances to detour through farmers fields. In spite of this impediment to speed, the testers averaged 32.75 miles on this stretch. ht The 50 slower yearly depreciation of the Franklin Car means more than a high resale value to the owner. ; . jjj 20 miles to the gallon ofgasoline 12,500 miles to the set of tires EAGLE BOATS LAUNCHED Although the war is forgotten by most of the public and has been consigned to the history makers, business is just beginning the end of the war work.
