" in farming, livestock raising, railroading, business, commerce, public utilities and other industries, in the supporting of schools, hospitals, churches, other institutions of public welfare, menacing public health and safety and threatening to undermine our social systems and political governments. The remedy for all these dangerous conditions lies in protecting the copper industry of the United States from the uncontrolled competition given in our own country .by the cheap-labeopper of foreign countries. The expeditious and feasible method of control may he had by proper and immediate tariff legislation. We earnestly urge you to exert yourself to the utmost to secure adequate tariff protection for our copper miners so that the present emergency may be passed without risking a complete breakdown of that which we have built up during the half century past. Resolution Discussed. The following resolution, in part, was disoasned at the regular meeting of the Brice Rotary elub last Thursday evening: The ci)icr mining industry of the states of Utah, Arizona, Montana, Michigan and many other states and communities is practically subtended and threatened with complete extinction. This condition has been brought about by the unlimited and unrestricted competition of foreign capper, produced from rich ores by eheap labor under conditions of actual ieonage and proximal ing slavery. Tho production and consumption of copper wiibin the United States ire practically in balanre when American mines are producing normally, a condition that assures the successful protection of this basic industry if an adequate tariff was in force. American copper miners, American eopier romjtanies, the eiitirn business, labor and Morial structure that is dependent upon the eopper industry, should be afforded ample tariff protection. The revival and maintenance of the American copper industry by the enactment of an adequate tariff is absolutely essential, from the standpoint of economic readjustment; of the reemployment df many thousands; the reestablishment of thousands of buriuessrs dependent directly on the industry; the revival of hundreds of miring eommunitiea and the reestablishment of business and taxable values; the resumption of production in order tnat the eopper mining induetry may re? uraa the payment of taxes necessary to maintain government within the many copper producing areas; the of markets for farm feet liblr-bmen- t products, in the. eopper mining .communities, and also fromyie standpoint. of its vital importance to na or i v. hundred families or about ten thousand persons ire destitute at Butte, Mont, looking to charity for food, clothing, shelter and medical attention. About 17,000 Thousand are in the same condition in the eopper mining communities of Arizona, and in Salt Lake eounty there are thousand persona whose thirty-fiv-e immediate needs are a public problem. A fund of $100,000 is being raised at Salt Lake City for the benefit of the unemployed, situations are similar in other mining districts. ' It is obvious to those of us who live in eopiwr mining states and who arc familiar with present social, political and economic conditions that an emergency of sufficient magnitude ia existent that ought to be given special attention of congress. Distress in the copper mining industry, among its workers and those dependent upon them should be eonsidend immediately and separate and apart from other problems and issues.
