Show FADE TWO THE SUN, PRICE, IV . . THE HUSBAND OF THE ORGANIST By VIRGINIA M. CORNELL ...Pub ... 10 by Short Mlorr ft Co.) TRENTON waa at Brat alght man, with JOHN and beard looking of no particular a man Ha waa a who, from an orphaned country boy, bad rlacn by arduoua struggle to be a city man of affluence ; but, uullke moat of thoae who have made themaelves, he had never been quite aatlHfled with hla handiwork. It Is possible that be might have been better satisfied with hla achievements had it not been for a feeling he had always hud that. In taking up the struggle for wealth, he had left something, the struggle for which would have been, to him, mitre worth while. He had never discovered exactly what this was, but he was conscious of its existence. In the course of years, John Trenton, the successful man of business, with harmony hidden In his soul, married the organist of St. Albans cathedral, a woman with harmony always at her fingers' ends. She was one of those strikingly ethercul looking women who, nine tlmea out of ten, receive more of some man's devotion than they deserve, and Mrs. Trenton was not the exception to prove thla rule. She had been no more than a comfortably poor girl when he married her. Her marriage, Indeed, had been to her but an avenue of escaiw from that poverty, for he was not a man she would have dreamed of marrying otherwlao. Had she married for love, it la quite pos- slide that she might have been more than an ordinarily loving woman ; but, married without it, she hnd never been able to forgive John Trenton the fart that he hnd not been able to Inspire love In her. Rut since he had not, she wrapped herself In her one earthly Joy, the sounds she evoked from her organ. Under their Sk11, her eyes glowed and her pulses thrilled as they never did to her husband's voice or touch, nor, It is but Just to her to add, to the voice or touch of any man. If she had a yearning for that greater and more satisfying emotion love though she looked at John Trenton with hotelesa yea, she looked at no other. He came gradually to look at her also with hopeless eyes, but In a different sense. She still seemed to him the living embodiment of all perfection. He had felt Immediately after the ceremony which had made them man and wife that there was not room enough m the earth, nor In the waters under It, to contain hla happiness and exaltation. Afterwards something mso like a aoh In hla throat when he thought of that moment. A few months after their marriage they went to Europe, where she could better satisfy the cravings of that passion which, while not for himself, waa yet, he felt, a tie between them. Not only because that, save for him, such opportunity might have nlwuys been lacking to her, hut because sometimes be thought that he really did understand her music. As It nhsorla'd her more and more, her playing grew to him more wonderful and divine. He could not renounce the pleasure of watching her Bugera ns they moved over the keys, nml lie had sometimes a sudden. Intense desire to sit at her place at the organ, and feel It obey his touch ns It did hers. Once, Indeed, when she had left the room, he laid hla hands upon the keyboard, und a sudden, flashing Insight came to him of Jlhe Joy of pressing tt? keys upon which his hands inertly rested, and of feeling them obey the Impulse of his brain, translating the strange thoughts that hnd thrilled him since his earliest boyhood. A wild desire to pour forth In sounds which she would understand the passion und pnln of his learning toward her surged through him. Ah. that he could make the organ cry to her what he hail never dared to cry : "Love me; love me; love nir." For a moment he sat In Imagination, holding her, willingly won. In his amis. Then he turned from his flashing vision aa from a temptation. It was after their return from ubrond that the man who timidly culled Mrs. Trenton wife came Into Ids title of husband of the organist," for. despite hla wealth, she dung to her bench In the organ loft on Sundays. She hnd grown farther thnn ever away from him, yet, ns he sat ench week with the crowd of worshipers at St. Allmn's cathedral, while at her will the roll of the great organ filled the edifice, she stll looked to him as In the dnya when he had Brat dreamt of winning her as pure and beautiful and serene ns a far-of- f star. Rut he had. ceased to dream that he could pnt out his amis and bring the star down to him. As years went by and nothing wns changed between them, hla position grew too bard to endure. Aa he brooded, be wns frightened by a womanish desire to weep In hla wifes presence to reach out hla nrms toward her with a longing cry of Love me; love me. And better the bitterness of death than that, he thought So he decided to go Rwny from her until Ms strength should return to him. Yet It would be unfair to Mrs. Trenton not to believe that there were times when her heart swelled with gratitude aa well as loneliness. It was generally understood, after a while, that John Trenton's marriage had not been aa successful aa Ills other undertakings, and that he was Indeed d from the city. The clrcum-atane- o served to make the organist of St. Alban's much more Interesting than she otherwise would have been to a good many people not habitual churchgoers, and her power over the HR. She was Invariably gentle, invariably kind, but Invariably cold. The truth waa that John Trenton, using hla energies unsparingly day and night In a foreign city, waa linppler thnn hla wife In the solitude of her splendid home and her long and puln-fu- l reveries. For a woman la a lielng who raunot keep her heart cold for a lifetime. In spite of her determination, there will struggle to It the yearning to lavish Itself upon a fellowbeing, and that yearning hnd come to Mrs. Trenton, lint there was no one, not even her nnloved hiiohund, for ber to lavish It upon. f Meanwhile, the beauty of the organist of St. Alban's was growing noticeably more and more ethereal. There were rumors that she was going Into a decline, and whatever the cause, there could be small doubt of the truth of the reports. Her duties at the cathedral presently became too great a drain u;kui her strength, and the church was forced reluctantly to accept her resignation. Then came the apparently fruitless effort to replace her. Mrs. Trenton herself, who had not altogether given np her attendance at the cathedral, waa perhaps the greatest sufferer from the deflcleneles of her auceessnra. To her music waa a need of life, yet, even In her own home, ahe played hut randy. It hnd grown to be an effort, and, when able to rouse herself, the emotion exhausted and weakened her. Rut alie was hungry for It for music which could rench her souL fine Sunday morning the Brat swelling chords that Hunted down from the orgnn loft caused an unusual flutter among the apathetic worshliiers, arousing an expectancy which communicated itself to Mrs. Trenton, who turned her face upward toward the Invisible player. In a moment the music waa pouring Into her soul, and she and the entire congregation sat In rapt attention. Chord upon chord, swelling harmonies, daring Improvisations, grand, reverent tnnea cnine rolling down In cadence never before hnd the people of St. Alban's listened to such music. And the former organist, faint, trembling with appreciation, waa the Brat to know It. When the service was over, many of the more curious lingered to catch a cr former, glimpse of the marvelous and were surprised that the descent of the new organist from the loft was not iiiTompunled by the sound of swishing skirts, and that they Indield a man. Rut not so Mrs. Trenton. It was not anthems, as the others thought, to which she had hcen listening, but to an npiienl an appcnl from one man to one woman. And she Imd recognized It Under the thrilling, vibrating harmony of sound she had henrd thnt old, despnlrlng, longing cry, Love me; love me; love me." ' She wns ready to give him her hand calmly when he reached her, but during the short drive home she found It Impossible to look nt liim. What was It thnt was so gripping her heart strings!
