H Son Sondrup rup 4 Ephraim Utah Fable of Postal Card An interesting fable has been circulated for or many years yearS' about the so-called so garbage postal card The story has it that Mrs Wm McKinley didn't like the picture I of her husband printed on II postal cards In 1902 Whether that is true or not the Postmaster General on April 29 of that year did order all till of oi them destroyed Somehow a box of of the rejected cards was delivered to New York City and sold by the Postmaster there to a Manhattan Manhattan Manhat Manhat- tan garbage disposal firm which had its own name and address printed on them Most Were Retrieved Most of these were r retrieved by a Postal official dispatched from Washington to get them back but a few ultimately reached reached reached reach reach- ed the hands of collectors and they have been referred to as the garbage cards ever since There is no official substantiation substantiation substantiation of the story about Mrs McKinley Actually the official records show they were destroyed destroy destroy- ed because they had not been well printed on the speed high-speed presses which were just then coming into use the garbage cards list up to catalogue value and a number of other issues of relatively rare postal cards list for places like 30 40 and 50 each Collecting of cards appears to have increased greatly in recent years along with increases in stamp collecting generally |
