The friends of Sheriff Naylor and the public generally are pleased that he was promptly acquitted by a jury in the Federal court of the charge of allowing to escape a United States prisoner who did not escape, and made no attempt to esc ape. DEVELOPMENTS. the difficulty of keeping the water pipe open, which supplied the works. oil circles has been Tery quiet In most of the fields the holders of land have been closing up their assessment work. It is a fact well worth mention that this class of work has been done on a great majority of the claims, and that on Jan. 1st, 1903, there will not be near so much land that can be located as it is thought by most people. What land will be left open will be far away from development and lacking in value on that account. In the upper or Wyoming fields, the work for the season is almost completed. As it now appears only a few rigs will be working throughout the winter months. In the Spring Valley field this is caused by the scarcity of water. Most of the water in this field is obtained from springs and these have, been frost scaled and appearances are that they will so remain until the break up in the spring. & & Oil has been struck in the Idaho well at Fossil. At a depth of 1,030 feet a flow of oil was encountered and immediately below it the drill penetrated a water stratum. The oil and Just water thus coming together. what the strike will amount to has not yet been found out. P. L. Griffin, who recently came from the well, is of the opinion that the regular oil sand has not yet been encountered, but that the oil discovered is coming up from the bottom and that the oil stratum is very near. The week n. , Oil company The New York-Uta- h whose well in Clark Valley is down feet, is lighting up its work, and running its engine from the gas which comes from the hole.
