Show TRUTH. ether are doing or are supposed to have discovered until they read the papers each morning and evening. Then the amaeturs set out and hatch a lot more fool theories, again which are religiously given to the papers as the creation of officer so and so, or detective whats his name. Daily, sometimes twice a day, comes the asesrtion of some wise guy working on the case, that Mortensen is on the eve of making a confession. Mortensen may be guilty and he may not. It certainly looks bad for him. That the crime is a heinous and utterly detestible one is admitted by everybody, but Mortensen, guilty or Innocent, has some rights. In the eye of the law he is innocent until proven guilty, and if the officers would direct their energies to finding evidence which would prove him guilty Instead of attempting to wring a confession from him by torturing him, it would be more to the point. Its an absolute shame and disgrace the way Mortensen has been treated since his arrest. Almost constantly, night and day, he has been in the "sweat-boChief of Police Hilton allowed him to be kept on the rack all the time by a lot of clumsy slobs, who think they can extort a confession from him. First one then another is sent to his cell. All kinds of stories are told him as to what has been discovered outside, what his wife or somehas said or his brother-in-labody else. He has had no rest night or day, and the object seems to be to wear him out physically and subject him to as much mental torture as possible. There is plenty of material in the case if properly handled to discover .who committed the deed, and instead of taking cowardly advantage of a helpless prisoner, a few intelligent men should have been put to work on the case to get up the evidence that would prove Mortensen guilty if he is guilty. The methods which have been pursued are too suggestive of the thumb-screand the rack, or the way supposed criminals are forced to confess in China. x. w the Laramie Copper and Gold Mining bonded for $1,000,000 to J.
