Show d Congressman supports Lone Peak Wilderness with Congressman Gunn McKay (D-Uta- Public Lands Subcommittee bill naming Lone Peark the first wilderness area in Utah. McKays support follows the subcommittee's adoption of language that would protect the area's watershed. Yesterday, McKay notified Rep. Teno Chairman of subcomRoncalio mittee, he would not support the reclassification of Lone Peak from "scenic'' to a more stringeal wilderness designation without specific guarantees cities wouldhave access to the watershed area by whatever means necessary to maintain and protect it. Rep. McKay drafted language he said would have to become part of the bill for him to vote for it. It guarantees "Motorized access and road maintenance by local municipalities for minimum maintenance activities. At issue is the nature and maintenance of toilet and other watershed facilities in the area. According to McKay, Forest officials interpret existing, Service statutes as protecting "wilderness resources. McKay says "water resources in this ease are just as important." "What they dont understand is Lone Peak is a major watershed for Salt Lake and other cities and toilets that protect the wilderness area can foul all the water that runs out of there, McKay said. Located southeast of Salt Lake City and northeast or Provo, the Lone Peak area covers parts of Utah, Wasatch, and Salt Lake counties, and feeds water to 6 , 8a STANDARD July 14, 1977 l new protective clause today threw his support to a House Wrights. -- Mrs. Betty Ward and children are planning to leave on an extended vacation to Calif., visiting Disney and and other parts of scenic interest. -- Terry Ivie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verl Ivie spent four days at Bear Lake with the Clinton Park family of Duchesne. McKay said the Forest Service is toilets inclined to use rather than toilets with enclosed sumps. "In the Lone Peak area the ground won't hold the waste. Vault toilets are absolutely necessary because the porrous ground let's contamination right into the underground aquifers. The problem is vault toilets are best serviced by truck and the Forest Service doesnt like moving trucks in and out of wilderness areas." McKay included language in the bill directing the Forest Service to "utilize whatever sanitary facilities are necessary to insure continued health and safety of the communities serviced by the Lone Peak watershed. "I know I speak for the rest of the delegation and the Governor when I thank the subcommittee for including this language in the bill, and I for one now give it my full support and will work for its passage," McKay said. a.
