We received a note this week from Cliff Memmott (for those who are newer in the ana, during the past 11 years, Cliff k the former publisher of the STANDARD.) He included an article given by Hack Miller at the Salt Lake Kiwanii Club meeting during National Newspaper Week. It was some of Hack's ideas about what a newspaper kanddoes. "There are many things I like about a newspaper. You can fed it, put it down for the dog, or dip and file it. "You can argue with it, send a letter to the editor. You can hate it or you can love it. It has a personality in its presentation. It is not the personality of the publisher, but the combined personality of the readers-whi- ch means it is a community product It k a friend with which you can associate. You ean refer to it often. You can quote it and prove your quote. You can believe it because it k not hearsay. k your voice mi some matters and your enemy's side of the story on some other matters. It is a (dace where politicians can state their platforms and you ean agree or disagree. Dean It can be a cruel device-Joean use it to get at such enemies as Earl Buts. It k not a dangerous weapon, and yet it ean force a president to resign, for hk malfeasance in office. It will also forgive that president if he elects to be forgiven. It holds grudges, it condemns, it loves, it forgives, it informs, it pleads, it excites and it can make a smile for you in an otherwise contrary world. May we always have our is the true statue of newspapers-whi- ch our liberty. Hack Miller k the managing sports editor of the Deseret News. We appreckte hk., views about the newspaper. Many of the advertisers that are sponsors of the contest say, be sure sad get a clue in my ad. But some merchants wonder if dues affect sales. Like Mark said at Cash Meat this week, "We didnt sell many muffin. Maybe it was because of the due you had there. We admit that muffins may not sell too well, but were there any customers that thought the muffin were really that old? Or was it pist a concidence? Anyway, the ads are being read. There were two clues this past week that were real small, inside some art work on one ad, but needy everyone found them. They must read every word in all of the ads. .
