Technique for tar and oil is tested The Interior Department is planning a n dollar research project, to be carried out northeast of Vernal to test a technique for producing oil from domestic "tar sands," Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, said today. Sen. Bennett explained that "tar sands" are formations of sand, sandstone or clay that hold crude oil The oil in tar sands is too sticky to be removed by the usual methods. Mining the tar sands presents another problem because underground or stripmining methods are not economical Sen. Bennett added. "Developing effective technology for using tar sands would mean production, in Utah alone, of some 28 billion barrels of oil," Sen. Bennett noted. Interior's Bureau of Mines will carry out the project, using lands now under lease to the Sohio Petroleum Company. The process to be tested involves drilling holes through the tar sands to a depth of 200 feet, then igniting the deposit at that depth to burn off hydrocarbons. The vaporized oil deposit then, in theory, will rise to the surface, where it can be condensed back into oil The first, drilling, step of the process is scheduled for completion this fall Sen. Bennett said. The burning itself will take 90 days with results of the experiment expected early in 1975.
