Survey rrews have hit the high Uintas trail for another round of alpine lake studies. The Uinta lake study, which began in 1971, is being conducted by the Fisheries Section of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. In the survey proposal, the project objective was to obtain indices of productivity, availability and fishing pressure as a basis for fish slocking and other management practices. Bill Tate, assistant chief of Fisheries, talked about the study in a recent interview. Most people don't realize the logistics problems involved in a project of this scope. In the first place, we just can't slay in the high country for long periods of time. The average summer up there is about 65 to 75 days, and that doesn't give us much time to work. The crews do their own housekeeping too, setting up camp, cooking, tending horses and other duties. Right now, the crews are averaging 50 lake studies each season. With some 520 lakes scheduled for study, the project figures to take ten years. Right now," Tate continued, we are thoroughly researching several typical lakes in each drainage and applying this data to other lakes in the area. Although we will eventually visit all the lakes, not all will be extensively studied. Studies have been completed on both the Lake Fork and Uinta drainages. This The Department of Health, Education and Welfare has appropriated $25 million in contracts to set up Professional Standards Review Organizations (PSRO) throughout the country, in accord with legislation drafted by Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, The PSRO Amendment to the Social Security Act became law in October, 1972 It provides for monitoring of the medical care given Medicaid and Medicare patients by boards of local physicians. With government spending more than $20 billion to purchase medical care--a it sum which will only increase in the was clear that we, as responsible legislators, would have to develop some mechanisms to audit and review the of the medical quality and necessity services our tax dollar purchased," recalled Sen. Bennett of his reasons for proposing the amendment. Establish Reviews The entire thrust of the PSRO Amendment," he said, was to establish local physician-operate- d review mechanisms." I believe that this basic concept was then, and remains today, the best way for American medicine to continue to control its own destiny, added Sen. Bennett, the ranking Repbulican on the Senate Finance Committee. Since the amendment's passage. Sen. Bennett has been active in urging HEW and responsible health care professionals to get the show on the road. Sangster and Johnson are Coal hearings A U.S. Department of the Interior hearing on proposed Federal coal leasing regulations will be held in Salt Lake City on August 12 according to Utah Senator (Yank E. (Ted) Moss. The Senator had requested that a hearing be scheduled in Utah when the Bureau of Land Management indicated earlier this year that hearings outside Washington were being considered. Moss said the Mark II. Green Hall at the University of Utah will be the place for the hearing. In May Moss asked the BLM to add Utah to its hearing list because, "Utah has 70 percent of its lands owned by the BLM, on much of which there are vast coal reserves. Moreover, the University of Utah, as one of the nations leaders in the field, is conducting extensive rsearch on technology. Testimony from the coal lessees and University witnesses would make a significant contribution toward the design of the optimum, coal leasing program. Senator Moss said other hearing locations on the draft environmental impact statement on federal coal policies will be: Billings, Montana, August 14; Casper, Wyoming, August 16, and Denver, Coio-ra'dAugust 19. Of the social security beneficiaries living in Duchesne County, 640 are retired workers and their dependents. Another are rereiving benefits as the survivors of workers who have died, and 130 are getting benefits as disabled workers or their dependents. Mr. Herrick pointed out that although most social security beneficiarii are older people, about one out of every four is under age 60. In Duchesne county, 320 people under age 60 are collecting social payments each month. Nearly 210 are under age 18, receiving payments because a working father or mother has died or is getting social security disability or retirement benefits. Some of the 15 in Duchesne beneficiaries county between 18 and 22 years of age, are getting student's benefits under a provision in the serial security law permitting the continuation of a child's benefits beyond his 18th birthday, and up to age 22. if the child is attending school ful time. FamQy Protection Also in this age group, Mr. Herrick said, are some other types of beneficiaries, illustrating the broad family protection that the social security program provides workers of all ages. Some are children of retired, disabled, or deceased workers who became disabled before they reached 22 and who will probably never be able to work and become The monthly benefits of these young people, severely handicapped by physical or mental disabilities, will continue indefinitely. Benefits are also payable to the mother if the disabled son or daughter is in the mother's care. Mr. Herrick said that another relatively small but significant group of youthful social security beneficiaries are those who are receiving benefits as disabled workers. Since December 1973 social security benefits have increased 11 percent, with 7 percent of the amount payable in March 1974 and 4 percent in June 1974.
