Show The Papier That Dares to Take A Stand TRIBUNE URE-MI- C The Salt tike 'January 23, 1980' The Utah Independent' FALSELY POISONING Tribune began the new year on a somewhat sour note with a strange attack on Salt Lake County Commissioner Robert G. Salter. The January 1st article by Tribune tarter Jon U re falsely implied that 'the' Conservative Commissioner had thrown his weight arountf to receive preferential treatment while attempting to pay the property tax, and renew the registration, for an automobile. Specifically, Mr. Ure implied that Salter used an employee of the County Assessors Motor Vehicle Office (2033 South State Street in Salt Lake) to run his chores by having her step in front of others waiting in line to pay taxes and register cars, thereby unfairly expediting his own requirements. When asked by a clerk why the Commissioner didnt do it himself, U re quotes the employee as saying sarcastically, He didnt like it. feel emphatically - and (The employee subsequently denied that any such conversation took place.) Mr, Ure claimed that, except for fear of undergoing another two hour wait, he would have stepped from the line to ask. Salter his reasons for pulling rank in such a his manner. Ure also asserted, by secretary said the commissioner had gone for the day. Further investigation into. the matter revealed Mr. Ures account to be, at best, an exceptionally sloppy job of reporting. Here, in chronological order, are the relevant details: 1. On December 30th (a Sunday) the Commissioner was reminded by a County Deputy Sheriff that the tags for his wifes car (which he was driving at the time) had as soon as possible. expired, and should be 2. On December 31st, the Commissioner called the County Assessors Office to determine how long it might take to pay the property tax on the car and have.it registered. He was told the lines were moving quite fast and the delay would be minimal. 3. That afternoon, Salter went personally to the Assessors Office around 3:00 p.m., only to find the lines by that time so lengthy that, after visiting an inner office mid-afterno- on, up-dat- ed DISHONEST, OR IGNORANT? ACCUSES SALTER to confirm how long it might take to move through them, he decided to leave and return on January 2nd rather than wait. 4. At this point, one of the young ladies in the office approached him and suggested that she might be able to help. The Commissioner thanked her for her kindness and handed her his checks. 5. To make a long story short, the young lady eventually succeeded in paying the taxes and obtaining the car registration and tags, after which the Commissioner returned to his duties in the City & County Building. (He had not left for the day.) Thats all there was to it. At no time did the Commissioner ask for special treatment in order to outflank those already waiting in line. (This has been verified by other witnesses on the scene.) He merely accepted assistance offered by someone else, as he was leaving, and had no knowledge of how that assistance, was subsequently rendered. Yet, the Tribune's reporter chose into an to convert this meaningless mole-hi- ll anti-Saltmountain of sludge. Mr. for assertion that he Ures the record, Simply talked to the Commissioners secretary was incorrect. records show that The Commissioners carefully-kefront-desk Ures call was taken by the receptionistfor the entire Commission. He did not talk to any member of Salters personal staff. Commissioner Salter recently hinted that he may run this year. Should he do so, he will likely for become the target of a torrent of similar distortions and smears. Two Commission seats will be up for grabs, and we suspect that Salters enemies (in the news media and as much as the elsewhere) do not fear his own possibility that his personal popularity could help pull into office yet another Commissioner, of similar body a decisive philosophy, thus giving the conservative majority. For this reason, from now through November, the citizens of Salt Lake County .would do well to take what they hear and read about Bob Salter with a hefty grain of salt.
