Anderson FREEDOM FOR CUBA The world gazes in paralyzed fear at the Soviet might as it moves into Afghanistan to secure control over its .tiny neighbor. Afghanistan lies in the path of the Soviet move to the oilfields of Iran and shipping lanes of the Persian Gulf. Isn't there just cause for the United States to proclaim a Declaration of Freedom for the people of Cuba - To Announce to the Soviet Reds that Cuba will be free that the Reds must depart posthaste. A firm declaration by the U.S: could inspire Cuban patriots to retake and establish freedom in their country. The spirit of freedom would spread like a brush fire to neighboring states in the Caribbean and Central America and send the red guerrillas packing. The Panama Canal would be safe and the oilfields and refineries of Latin America secure. Good as all this may sound it is wishful thinking to expect our State Department to change what has been its policies over the past 40 years. Can we expect the State Department to declare Freedom for Cuba, when they (1) supported Castro as the George Washington of Cuba but a few years ago; when they (2) no longer call the East European countries, captive nations; when they (3) undermined Somoza by cutting off all ammunition, thus allowing the Red Sandinista to take Nicaragua; when they (4) engineered the Panama Canal giveaway; when they (5) undermined the Shahs g Khomeini; regime, bringing to power the when they (6) betrayed our long time friend, Taiwan in favor of Red China; when they (7) prevented the military from winning in Vietnam and Korea, giving Southeast Asian to the Reds; when they ,(8) by their policies, have hastened the Communist Advance and the downfall of -- un-Ameri- can them Bv Paul Scott Washington, D.C., The large numbers of Soviet military personnel and the huge amounts of equipment is sending new shock being poured into Afghanistan waves through the U.S. intelligence community and is causing a major reassessment of Soviet intentions and capabilities in the region. What was originally thought to be an expeditionary force of 40,000 to 50,000 is turning out to be a permanent invasion of 100,000 Soviet troops including elite combat units formerly stationed in East Germany. is something else. Once upon a time there were three bears: papa bear, mama bear, and baby bear. Someone has eaten my porridge! cried baby bear in her high little voice. Bitch, bitch, bitch! said mama bear. I havent even put it in the bowl yet! Actually, most of our porridge has already been put into the bowl, and here are my predictions as to what it will taste like. Bear in mind, Im not a prophet, and neither are all the phonies who claim to be. I dont even know what star I was bom under. But anybody whos got walking around sense can score 80 or more a real prophet , if hell always scores 100 his in include just predictions such things as itll rain every month during 1980. Military Buildup Near Iran In addition to this extra large military manpower buildup, there has been a huge stockpiling of military equipment in Afghanistan and the Soviet Union at airfields near borders with Iran. Within the U.S. intelligence community, this ominous buildup is now being taken as a clear signal that the Kremlin plans to use Afghanistan as a base to work with Islamic and Communist groups in Iran for an eventual takeover of that countrys vital oil and gas fields. pro-Sovi- et No Assistance From Iran Despite its Islamic fervor, the revolutionary government in Iran has offered no assistance to the Moslem rebels fighting the invading Soviet forces despite their 400 mile border and long cultural ties. . and traitors. The President belives the U.S. must concentrate on protecting Saudi Arabia and its vast supply of oil and the other small Arab nations in the Persian Gulf region. To implement this strategy, the Carter Administration is now seeking to establish a series of bases' in the Indian Ocean-MiddEast region that could be used by U.S. forces to protect Saudi Arabia. or vinegar, Russian dressing. The militant students and police of the Ayatollah have gone out of their way to protect the Soviet Embassy and its personnel from Afghan demonstrators. For reasons of their own, the hardline assessment of the intelligence community has not been accepted by President Carter and his foreign policy advisers who have the last word in what type of action the U.S. will take in the region. Their policy planning and decisions so far have been based on the questinable judgment that the Soviets will limit their current military operations to Afghanistan and that Moscow is not now engaged in a move to control the sea lanes and oilfields around the Persian Gulf. of whats in our porridge bowls was put there over a period of years by demagogs, fools, baloney, Khomeini's True Color T Much Soviet-leanin- SCOTT SOVIETS EYE IRANIAN OIL "Us the New Year and a : : by PAUL ANDERSON Morality, and Truth Stand THE SCOTT REPORT Independent Dedicated To A le Secret Understanding with Soviets Significantly, this strategy fits into the understanding the President worked out with he Soviet leadership at Vienna last June whereby Iran and its oil would pass into the Soviet sphere of influence while Saudi Arabia and its oil would remain under that of the U.S. 7 I . i While the brutal Soviet invasion of Afghanistan may have shocked the President into seeing the Russians in a new light, it appears not to have the oil deal he reached with the Soviet leadership at Vienna last June. : ..
