Kmhntr The Credit Noose Tightens thanks. Part I THE EDITOR One of our soundest conservative American economists and most knowledgeable monetary authorities is Dr. G. C. Wie-ganEmeritus Professor of Economics at Southern Illinois University. Dr. Wiegand was engaged in international business in New York for nearly 20 years, traveling and lecturing extensively in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa. He u the author of several hundred articles and author or of seven books. Much of the information used in this series of articles is taken from his essay published recently in Monetary Tract Number 17, by the Committee for Monetary Research and Education, Inc. The comment and opinions expressed arc our own. 90 CASE HISTORIES d, co-auth- or We are living in a credit bubble which could burst at any time, but is more likely to keep expanding until it doubles or trebles its present gigantic size. At the end of 1975, American corporations owed more than $1.3 trillion, an increase of more than half a trillion, or about 65 percent within five years. In the early 19608 about 15 percent of the corporate gross income was needed to pay interest; by the about 40 percent. Think of it, dear reader, 40 percent of corporate gross income being paid out for interest charges. You wonder why prices are high. Interest on mounting debt is one of the reasons. A sharp decline in earnings or a recession would prolonged plunge many corporations into bankruptcy, similar to that of Penn Central and Lockheed. Government rescued these two, but allowed W. S. Grant to be liquidated. Nobody knows how many other corporations would be in trouble if profits should decline. Nobody knows how many of them government could rescue and how many would have to go through bankruptcy. In either event, it would be a cataclysmic disaster. Another indication of the decline of the liquidity of American corporations is the statement, according to the 1976 economic report of the President, that the ratio of corporate cash and government securities holdings to current debts declined from 60 percent in 1950 to 35 percent in 1960 and a low of 20 percent in 1975. . mid-197- . . , 0s In 1967, corporate earnings covered interest payments more than ten times, a very safe average ratio; in 1975 earnings covered interest payments only about twice. The fact that corporate earnings are only double the interest charges is frightening. It wouldnt take much of a jolt to wipe out profits altogether.
