Show The Paper That Dares To Take Page 10 The Utah Independent April 15, 1976 CONNALLY, NIXON, & A Stand MARILYN MANION ROCKEFELLER By Paul Scott Washington: Vice President Nelson Rockefeller is convinced that former President Nixon is still maneuvering to help former Treasury Secretary John Connally get on the 1976 GOP Presidential ticket. That's the private political assessment the Vice President has given several of his closest Washington friends prior to his departure for his current round the world trip. Rockefeller, who is doing some maneuvering of his own to be ready to make his Presidential bid should the opportunity present itself, cites Nixon's trip to Peking as an attempt to embarrass his successor. President Ford, and indirectly aid Connallys political fortunes. By embarrassing Ford at the outset of the GOP Presidential primaries, Rockefeller contends, Nixon apparently had hoped to either knock Ford out of the GOP race or make his contest with Ronald Reagan so close that the President would have to turn to Connally for help to win the nomination. Connallys political stand in the upcoming Texas GOP primary in May is a matter of considerable interest to both President Ford and Reagan as indicated by their recent courting of the former Texas Governor. An example of this was the Presidents White House dinner for Connally. An unconfirmed report, now circulating among GOP Senators, is that Ford has suggested to Connally that he would be his next Secretary of State if he (Ford) is . nominated and elected. In his private report on the Nixon-Connalrelationship. Rockefeller says Nixon, when he was President, promised Democrat Connally that if he switched his allegiance to the Republican party, Nixon would do all in his power to ly that Connally succeeded him. Rockefeller noted that the alliance was confirmed in a new book by former White House aide and Watergate defendant, Charles Colson. His source was Nixon.
