Kershner Political Arithmetic A prominent political leader, often mentioned as a presidential candidate, made a plea recently for the federal government to furnish employment to those who are not working. Among other things, he said: If we had just enough jobs this year to match the unemployment rate of 1968, we would collect enough federal taxes to wipe out the entire federal deficit, this year and next. In 1968, there were 2,817,000 unemployed persons in our country (Readers Digest Almanac, page 186, 1975 edition). The Senator told a group from Kane County, Kaiparotitz will be all right in regards to the Senate Clean Air amendments. But according to Carlson, a former Assistant Secretary of Interior, He simply does not understand what is involved. Kaiparotitz will not be all right. Passage of those amendments mean the project will be delayed so many more years by additional studies and court tests it will soon no longer be an economically wise development. Carlson pointed out this bill will mean the loss of 10,000 jobs in Utah. Those jobs would be lost in Salt Lake, Utah, Tooele, Washington, Kane, Iron, Garfield, Beaver, Sevier, Wayne, Emery, Carbon, and Uintah counties. In SACRIFICES fact, it will eventually affect the economy of the entire state. Dear Editor: According to a senator on the The perceptive message Public Works Committee, the bill printed in your column (Readers may be forced through the Senate by April 8 . Carlson said, The bill may become law before many Senators have a chance to study it. Senator Moss is not taking any action to slow the bill down. Rather, he is giving it encouragement by saying it may not apply to key projects in Utah when all the evidence indicates otherwise. The Republican senatorial candidate noted passage of the amendments will mean federal land use planning of the worst sort. It could also produce greater pollution in Provo, Salt Lake City, and Ogden because industries will not be allowed to locate in the less populated areas of the state. Consequently, Carlson added, industry will have to locate in the more populated areas. The Air Gean Amendments proposed are clearly bad environmental legislation. Carlson said, I plead with my fellow Utahns to act now to stop this , terrible legislation that promises to cripple the economy of Utah. Contact Senator Moss and other Utah legislators to oppose this legislation. A few weeks from now could be too late. (for more information call (801) 532-2- 1 18 or 272-739- 4) |
