It proved to us, through Watergate, that our political system is despicable. We now know that the CIA is a wicked horror show. And time informs us that J. Edgar Hoover may very well have known that the Communist Party was never a genuine internal threat to the nation but a useful, popular target to ensure financial and public support for the FBI. No telling what we will learn next week. John Congressman Ashbrook of Ohio maintains that much of the media is engaged in distorting the news. Appearing on a Forum Manion radio program, he had this to say: It seems to me that the American Left and the TV media apparatus have embarked on what I believe to be one of the most significant propaganda crusades in recent history. Theyre definitely the brutal underplaying bloodbath of Communist takeovers and hailing the conquering tyrants as an improvement over their former regimes. This blatant re-writi- of ng history overlooks the clear, the tragic, the barbarian record of Communism in dealing with conquered peoples throughout the world. The New York Times, for example, on April 13, 1975, had a large feature story, the gist of which was, Communist rule is at least uncertain, napalm is not. The heading went on in large type to say, Indochina For Without Americans Most A Better Life.' This was a Sydney Schanberg article. The broad picture that the liberal reporters overlook in their effort to rewrite history to the sympathetically Communist butchers is that as Communists, an operating fact of life, kill the conquered, kill their countrymen, and make no bones about purges as a means of establishing and holding their leadership in a country. Having read thousands of articles over the past 25 years on the subject of Communism, and having become accustomed to the managed news and the brainwashing technique of the Left, I didnt think I could ever read an article which would top them all. The Schanberg article does top them all. Its the most dishonest propagandists article on Communism I've ever read. In it, he says, It will be nice when Americans get out of the killing business in Indochina. Well, of couise, thats the way they put the knife into our country. The second posturing is bad enough, but he arrogantly ignores the operating principles of Communism. To mislead his readers by referring to their acts of brutality and murder as, 1 quote, abnormal behaviour, clearly implying that if anyone is killed its an isolated example and not to be confused with the regular expected actions of a Communist takeover. Now, here is his entire an is phase , cold-blood- silence; a calm comes ed whose borders are sealed, whose over . a country communications with rest of the world curtailed. In a sense and in modified form, the practice of competitive land acquisition has often been used by Urban Renewal. The UR authority says to its client hopefuls (builders and rcdevclopers). For the record, the word cheap would be phrased to Less than acquisition costs meaning that the UR authority condemns private property, takes it from the owners, lavishes taxpayer money on it to manicure it for resale, then sells it for less than it cost the UR authority. 1 once asked an accountant in southern California if balance sheets carried Zoning categories listed as assets. The Lake Tahoe (Calif.) regional situation is a classic example. Property owners there, after the California Tahoe Regional Planning Agency plans went into effect, filed hundreds of lawsuits because the restrictions imposed by the Agency caused their property to become less valuable no longer usable for their own plans. The idea of taxing land according to its usage, a category prescribed by the governmental services the land requires, is basically honest and fair to all parties concerned. For instance, if land is assessed according to usage, a city lot would pay taxes levied to cover urban services such as sewers, streets, and street lighting, police, biggest. The answer to that is that the farmers would be paying taxes for the children's schools when assessed on the residential value of their home sites on the farms, a valuation higher than their acreage assessment.
