Show January The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand By Robert M. Bartell WASHINGTON, D.C. (Liberty Lobby News Service)-Perh-aps its just the normal irresponsibility and hypocrisy prevalent here in responsible circles' in Washington, or perhaps its convulsive insanity. Whatever it is, the feds here seem to be trying their best to drag you and me into another war we dont want or need. . .thousands of miles away on the other side of the world-t- his time in Africa. Yes, fellow taxpayer, it appears that without your knowledge or consent, the cloak-and-daggguardians of this democracy the CIA have already spent $50 million of your money on arms and ammunition so African tribes can more efficiently tear up each other. As you know, when Portugal was forced to relinquish its two vast colonies in Africa Angola and Mozambique the spectre of anarchy immediately raised its head. The vast mass of people in these areas of black Africa are simple savages who, from time immemorial, have asked nothing from the ' rest of the world except to be left alone. But of course they have not been left alone, first by the Portuguese who controlled that part of Africa for 400 years and now by a lace er so-call- pants army of by John F. McManus Christmas is not Belmont, Massachusetts celebrated in Soviet Russia. Nor is this greatest of days commemorated in Communist China, Communist Cuba, or any other Communist nation. The message of Christmas, obviously, is incompatible with the tenets of totalitarianism. What is that message? Among its many parts are these: that Christ, not man or government, is the hope of the world; that each human being, regardless of station, has infinite worth, far more than any government; that Gods law should never be suspended by mans; that, in eternity, good will be rewarded and evil punished; and that true peace will reign only when mankind abides by the message of Christmas. Communism cannot coexist with any of that, so Christmas in Communist lands is taboo. Christmas Under Attack But the true meanings attached to Christmas are also under attack here in the United States. Seventeen years ago, United Nations partisans unveiled a plan to substitute promotion of the world body for traditional Christmas decorations. The campaign scored a success when Bambergers department store in Newark, New Jersey, substituted various UN symbols for reminders of Christmas. In 1959, other stores were planning to follow suit. And plans to alter the religious or patriotic significance of Easter, the Fourth of July, and other holidays were about to be implemented as well. The whole project was stopped cold, however, through a letter-writin- g campaign led by of members The John Birch Society. An impressive volume of carefully reasoned protests persuaded store owners to reject the substitution of the UN for Christmas. Before another year had passed, this whole package of subversion had been discarded. The war on Christmas, unfortunately, has proceeded on other fronts. Only a few years ago. Court rulinp banned anything of a religious well-organiz- as usual. A suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union had scored one more victory over Christmas. Another brazen perversion of Christmas is the continuing promotion of UNICEF cards in place of traditional Christmas cards. The U.S. Postal Service gives this campaign a boost by permitting UNICEF partisans to sell their cards in Post Offices throughout the land. UNICEF, of course, repeatedly chooses Communists and (sqch as Pablo Picasso, Karel Svolinsky, Lojos Vincze, and Jean Lurcat) to design the cards, which it then sells to unsuspecting Americans. And most UNICEF cards are devoid of the true meaning of Christmas. is dawning! Dear Master, let it be, On earth, or else in heaven. Another year for Thee! -- Author unknown -travelers What of the Future? Most Americans would never have thought that one day Christmas would have to be defended in the United States. But that day has come and our nation is not a better place because of it. Christmas has always been a part of our national tradition. The day became a national holiday because of its profound religious meaning. And our nation is free, in large part, because of the strong Christian beliefs of our forefathers. The drive to supplant Christmas with atheistic and materialistic substitutes portends a future for our nation not unlike that of other lands where Christmas and freedom are both gone. We wish for our country nothing but the best at Christmas and throughout the year. And we send to men of good will everywhere our hope for an abundance of Christmas blessings. 1 975 From a recent report by U.S. Senator Jesse Helms: In operating my office, I feel an obligation to be as careful with the money allocated to me as I would be if I were operating a business, and spending my own money. As a result, since I have been in the Senate, I have turned back to the U.S. Treasury a total of $351,147.42 of the funds which were allocated to me, and which I could have spent. Heres how this great geopolitician described why you and 1 have to get involved in tribal warfare in Angola, like it or not: If U.S. opposition to Soviet activities in Angola ends, he says, The communists will take it over and thereby considerably control the oil shipping lanes from the Persian Gulf to New York. When I read that I didnt know whether to laugh or cry. I had to look at the map to try to figure out whether I was crazy or Moynihan was. You see, Angola is on the opposite side of Africa from the Persian Gulf! There is no way the Soviets could interdict oil from Angola! Also, says the befuddled diplomat, Russia could invade Brazil from Angola! Now thats across some 3,000 miles of ocean, mind you! Perhaps the Russians intend to borrow money from us to build a bridge.
