The demotion and retirement came after a pacifist-mindesergeant under General Lavelles command in Vietnam took upon himself the role of political d and secretly to politicians in reported Washington that the general was waging war against the comcommissar munists too zealously. Specifically, Lavelles Seventh Air Force was reported to have flown a number of air strikes Vietnamese North igainst nilitary concentrations . being built up in preparation for the coming invasion of the south. A Naive General The strikes took place at a time when the Kissinger-Nixo- n political scenario called for no U.S. attempt to prevent this buildup. General naively believing . Lavelle, that . his mission was to engage and destroy the North Vietnamese enemy regardless of the political machinations going on in Washington in preparation for the coming Presidential campaign, covered himself by the reporting raids as strikes. protective reaction Liberals Were Outraged After the sergeant sneaked off his whining letter to Washington and Lavelle publicly admitted to the House Armed Services Committee what he had done, the columnists and the System politicians screamed in outrage: a mere general, a despised military man, had attempted to circumvent his civilian masters ; Lavelle had tried to sabotage their master plan for American defeat. It was intolerable! The irony is particularly sharp since it is difficult to imagine a more immoral order than the one General Lavelle disobeyed: an order deliberately designed to give a military advantage to the enemy in time of war. Lamppost Justice for Traitors There was more than indignation in the liberal outcry against Lavelle, however; one could also detect an element of fright. Lavelles insubordination raised before the System the specter of a generals revolt It is ironic that American liberals, who have insisted that all soldiers have not only the right but the obligation to refuse to obey immoral or illegal orders from their military GENERAL JOHN D.
