MARVA & GREG BEESLEY CONSERVATIVE OF THE WEEK Jack Lambson Theres no doubt that the defeat of the Utah Land Use Act by referendum was a cherished victory for the conservatives. There were many who participated in that struggle, doing whatever was necessary to secure the final outcome; and one of the hardest workers was Greg Bcesley. Greg and Austin Belnap were of the Concerned an Citizens Committee, an organization created to help defeat Land Use on a statewide basis. Greg's constant drive and encouraging smile helped to secure sufficient signatures to put the Act on the ballot. With his desire to see a job through to the end, he helped follow with successful a educational program. During this same period of time. Greg was managing the campaign of Austin Belnap who was running for the House of Representatives for the State of Utah in the I st Congressional Dis- trict. Again, Gregs drive and fortitude were a primary reason for Austin garnering a position in the September primary and obtaining more than 40 of the vote. In fact, so dedicated was Greg that he sold laun-dr- v his business, a and cleaners which hed had for five vears, and gave his full time to coin-operat- ed & Joye Wyatt Apache Indians and learned to respect and love these people. After his return from his mission Greg served on a stake mission the Valley View Stake. It was during this time that he met his wife, the former Marva Jean Gordon. They were married in March of 1967. But this issue has consistently generated more heat than light. In general, our study of the effects of the amendment has convinced us that, rather than granting rights to women, it will take many rights and privileges away. Drawing from sources for and against the proposal, we offer the following brief summary of the E.R.A.s REPAIR RENTALS Salt lafca City, Utah 4I01 & Industrial Heating & Plumbing Air Conditioning 16 Kensington Ave. Salt Lake City 484-525- 5 open-ende- d .... proposal and, on a purely selfish basis, every practicing attorney should be for it. Enthusiasm Greatly Diminished Before many Americans had even heard of it, the amendment won passage in both Houses of Congress and in many state legislatures. During the past two years, however, careful studies pointing out its dangers have been widely distributed. As a result, progress towards state ratificagaining the necessary thirty-eigh- t tions has slowed to a virtual standstill. Knowledge of the destructive potential of the E.R.A. has even caused the legislatures of Tennessee and Nebraska to officially reverse their previous ratifications, and other states are considering similar moves. What the E.R.A. Will Do It will abrogate existing labor legislation designed to protect women from exploitation. It will void laws requiring a man to support his wife and family, thereby inviting an increase in the already high rates of divorce and de- Stop the EJRA. Its language is so that no one is able with precision to predict exactly what it will do. Former Indiana Congressman David W.
