However, the firm's president, Cecil Fitch, is optimistic about the future. The end of the governments premium prices on lead and zinc, the company's major products, caused, losses in the third quarter. Major readjustments were made by the company to produce a higher-graore in order to Offset the premiums which had formerly been paid. At the same time, the firm has been carrying on exploration and development work, using government appropriations, and rehabilitating and mechanizing its plant to regain its prewar condition. A considerable outlay has been 'required, but the companys mines have been opened up to new depths. Mr. Fitch states that the ore supply and availability now is "very couraging indeed. "Mr. Fitch indicated that November and December saw a return to profitable operations. For the ten months to Nov. 1, profits were $96,840, but this figure did not include a provision for taxes on government appropriations for use in exploring the mining properties owned by the company in the Tintic District of Utah. This tax is disputed by Chief Consolidated and Mr. Fitch declared it to be wholly unjustified. , . Net - earnings last year, amounted to 7 cents a share on 1,180,000 common shares. The company last paid a dividend in 1928. If prices of metals remain at their present levels, Mr. Fitch is confident the new discoveries of higher-gra- de ores, and the complete mechanization of the mines, will ensure profitable operations. Airborne magnetometer surveys have been under way by St. Joseph Lead .Company and American Metal with the hope of developing deep deposits of lead below the shallow surface diggings. The. plane flies along parallel lines about one mile apart, and the magnetometer records the magnetic field below. It is plotted on contour graphs as a wavy line an increasing magnetism will plot a peak, . showing an anticline, or an arch in the eafths. basement rock, which in this case is granite or porphyry. These basement rocks are deeply covered in this area by sedimentary rocks, limestone, shale and sandstone. The theory is that ore deposition is most favorable along the edge of these buried granite ridges or anticlines, where the limestone rock may be more or less fractured by. the granite uplift. This fracture area follows the circulation of mineral bearing water, which may drop its load of mineral in favorable ' spots. This magnetometer survey has shown several definite anticlines,' it is said. It will help exploration by eliminating unfavorable areas, thus saving useless drilling, and will indicate favorable, areas to be drilled. 8, 3. 3; Exchange Quotations - JOPLIN, Mo. - 15: - low-gra- de at 3. at 53; 300 at S3; SOS 53.
