Utah Consolidated Mines Co. in the Park. The Silver King Coalition 800-to- n concentrator at Park and treated only s City operated ore from the company' mine.' .The Pacific Bridge Co. at Park City operated its 1500 tons tailings plant at a high rate throughout the year and in addition treated some zinc- -' lead ore on a custom basis for an operator near Milford. Reuben Garpett continued to operate a small flotation, mill at Park several City and thousand tons of current tailings . from, the Silver 'King. Coalition the mill. The Columbia mill-oOhio Copper Co., in the West Mountain (Bingham) district treated a large tonnage of old coppertailings, and the Big Indian mill of the same company treated carbonate copper ore from the company mine in the La Sal district, San Juan County. The Big Indian mill was closed at the end of November. Nearrthe --close of the year a report stated mill soon would that a 500-to- n be operating at the Horn Silver mine ' near Milford in Beaver County. The Garfield copper smelter of the American Smelting 8c Refining Co. operated throughto out the year but was forced curtail its operations- - sharply during the Bingham and Garfield Railroad strike when copper concentrates from the Magna and Arthur mills were cut off. The Murray lead smelter of the American Smelting & Refining Co. and the Midvale lead smelter of the United States Smelting, Refining 8c Mining Co. operated all 'year and treated lead concentrates, crude lead ore, and silicious ores. Material for the Murray . plant was supplied mainly by mines in Utah and Idaho, and that for the Midvale plant chiefly, from company-owne- d properties in Utah. The Tooele lead plant of the International : Smelting 8c Refining Co. operated in conjunction with the company, zinc ad on in-194- zinc-lead-sil- ver - re-trea- ted . - - slag-fumi- ng ores plant and treated and old slag, lead ore and concentrated, and zinc ores from and cusboth company-owne- d sources. 'The tom' plant treated a total of about tons of hot current 158,600 slag, old cold slag, and crude ore in 1947, compared with 179,715 tons in 1946; the resulting zinc zinc-le- ad slag-fumi- ng fume tons), averaging 72.7 percent zinc, was shipped to the National Zinc Co. at Bartlesville, Okla., and the lead fume ((2,610 tons); averaging 50.0 percent lead, was at the Tooele lead smelter. Geld The spectacular pace set by gold in Utah in 1947 brought output of the metal well above 400.000 ounces to establish the highest figure in the States history; the former high of 391,544 ounces was reached in 1942. -figures may be required to determine whether Utah regained. its former position as the State, but largest it is certain that the State moved into third place and possibly (19,600 re-trea- ted Final- gold-produci- ng into second or first place. Straight gold mining showed 1947, and base-met- al ores continued to supply most of the Statezinc-le-gold-co- pper ore, 88 percent; ore, 8 percent, and other base-met- al ores, 1 percent, leaving 3 percent contributed by only gold and silver ores. The West Mountain (Bingham) district in 1947 gained about 170 percent in gold Output over that in 1946 and furnished 92 percent of the State total. The Park City region held close to thj 1946 level, and the Tintic district recorded a decline. The Utah Copper mine was the outstanding producer of gold in little improvement in ad . Chief Consolidated proper-t- v (zinc-lea- d ore, lead ore, and silver ore), and Eureka Lily mine (gold-silv- er ore), all in the Tintic district; National Tunnel & Mines Co. (copper ore and zinc-leore) in the West Mountain (Bingham) district; Calumet mine ,( zinc-leore) in the Rush Valley district; .and the Eagle and Blue Bell mine (gold-silvore) in the Tintic'district These nine properties, produced over 98 percent of the State, gold in 1947. Silver The gain of about three and a third million ounces over, the 1946 output of 4,118,453 ounces brought Utah silver production in 1947 to the highest figure since 1944. Almost without exception, every important producer increased its output of silver, and production in 1947 was more than double that in 1946 at the Utah Copper mine. United States & Lark, group. Pacific Bridge Co. operations, and the Butterfield property. Increases were noted in each of the three leading districts, but were particularly marked in the West Mountain (Bingham) district. The important stiver producers in Utah in 1947 in order were the Utah Copper mine, United States & Lark group, Chief Consolidated Mining Co., Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co., New Park Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Calumet mine. Pacific Bridge. Co., Tintic Standard .Mining CcL and the Butterfield property. From these 10 properties came 91 percent of the State silver in 1947. Zinc-lea- d ore, zinc ore, and lead ore together supplied 52 percent of the total silver in Utah in. 1947,. copper ore 40 percent, and siliceous ores 8 percent Copper - The yield of copper In Utah in 1947 virtually equaled that in 1941, the first year influenced by World War II; it has hot been matched in any previous peacetime year- in State history; and it has been surpassed only in the years 1942-4- 4. Remarkable as this record is, it would have been .even more so but for the labor strike on the Bingham & Garfield Railroad, which lasted from October 22 to November 5 and is estimated to have caused a loss, of some 26,000,000 pounds of copper from the Utah Copper mine. As the largest copper mine in . the United States, the Utah Copper mine produced all but a relatively, small part of Utahs copper in 1947 and contributed more than 30 percent of the Nations mine output of the metal. Other mines in Utah that yielded over a million pounds of recoverable copper in 1947 were the United States & Lark group, the National Tunnel 8c Mines property (closed in August), and the Columbia group of the Ohio Copper Co., all in the West Mountain (Bingham) district The Big Indian, mine in San Juan County, which ras in the million-poun- d class in 1946, was closed at the end of November, 1947. Copper ore and old tailings treated in Utah in 1947 totaled about 29,100,000 tons, compared with 12,471,208 tons in 1946. ' Lead Lead mining in Utah in 1947 made a very favorable showing and had the best year since 1944. Production of the metal ' at the United States & Lark, group was more than double that in 1946, and six or seven other large producers made marked increases over their 1946 outputs. The 10 leading lead producers in order were the United States 8c Lark group. Chief Consolidated Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mine Co., New Park Mining Co., Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co.. Calumet mine, Butterfield group, Pacific Bridge Co., International smelter slag dump, and the Horn Silver mine. These properties contributed 91 percent of the State lead in 1947. Zinc Zinc output in Utah in 1947 rose to the highest figure since 1943. The West. Mountain (Bingham) district produced almost two and a half times as much in 1947 as in 1946; yield was about 22 percent higher in the Park City region; the Tintic district, however, recorded a small decrease. Zinc production gained over 20,000,000 pounds at the (zinc-lea- d . ad ad er' - . silver-- producing . . : - - - ! . . .January 30, 1945 . wf -- k u u-t- or The success of recent offerings of additional shares of .common stock by The Texas Co. and Standard Oil CO. (Ohio) may induce other, petro-- r leum companies to issue rights as a means of raising funds for capital expenditures. The major oil companies want to spend about 4. billion this year and next for expansion of facilities to meet the growing demand for crude oil and: refined petroleum " . products.' It is believed In oil industry circles that at least one other large . company, seeking new working capital, plans to issue rights to its common stockholders. This company reportedly was waiting to see how the Tex- aco and Sohio' rights went. ..Texaco received subscriptions for the purchase of 2,210,000 common shares or more than 98 per cent of the total additional shares offered. Subscriptions for additional common shares of Sohio amounted to 565,-46shares or 96.8 per cent of the total offered.
