ARRESTED ON SUSPICION. the workman produces. UTAH STATE JOURNAL DECEMBER FRIDAY, GRAND OPERA HOUSE JOS ClaARK, Thin morning F. Kirk and George Rivera were arrested by Officers Had-loc- k and Burton on Twenty-fift- h street on suspicion of being two of the men who buncoed Solomon Edgar out of 170. The men will likely have a hearing before Judge Howell lidding of its trust employers. Parties, like individuals, to fulfill the measure of their creation must rise to the dignity and the duty of a great opportunity presented. By this rule the Democracy of the United States should now attain to its greatest stature of achievement. On the side of the party in power there is a demoralization such as has not been witnessed since 1870. At the head of the administration stands a man placed there by the non-essenti- als ar ill will of his enemies; a man honest by intention, but full of misdirected zeal and misguided by selfish ambitions; a man who would have been one of the last to be chosen by his party for the office which he now holds, and who only reached the line of succession because of the belief in the good health and long life of William McKinley. Indeed at the time the ticket was nominated the most pointed criticism a Democrat could make of its personnel was to ask Republicans how they would feel if some fatality were to occur by which Theordore Roosevelt would be made president of the United States. And Republicans almost universally said it would be a doubly deplorable circumstance; for they had full confidence in Mr. McKinley and at that time none in the rough rider. Mr. Roosevelt has been governed entirely by the dangerous impulses which have characterized his whole official life none of them dishonest, but most of them so boyish and so lacking in statesmanship as that the country in its relations abroad and its affairs at home has been constantly trembling on the verge of disaster. It is almost needless to argue that this is Mr. Roosevelt's character and that it has been manifested constantly in public life. As assistant seretary of the navy he would have sent a hostile fleet to sink the ships of Spain before war was declared. As lieutenant colonel of the rough riders in Cuba he joined in a most insubordinate and willful dispatch to the war department. As president he condemned the thieving officials of the post-offidepartment without a hearing; and after the hearing permitted the greater criminals to go unwhipped of justice. He started after the trusts as strenuously, as in the older times he rode his broncho to cut out and throw a wild steer; but he retained as attorney-generof the United States a man who had made an immense private fortune as the attorney for the steel magnates. His impulse for good has always been checked in mid career by his anxiety not to fatally offend the politicians and the financiers of his own ce al The opportunity and the duty of the Democratic party are thus imperatively calling. No personal ambition of any man and no whimiscal devotion or opposition to the of principles must stand in the way of that union whereby victory can be gained or the people of the United States. The irinciples of the Democratic party as they ap-ein the platform and in the enunciation of the leading men of house and senate are satisfactory to party followers everywhere. There can arise no serious schism in the party on the account of the nomination; since the only possible presidential candidates are entitled to the confidence of all and are by none of the millions of Democrats in the country. What a magnificent affirmative policy the democracy may now inaugurate! To establish a reign of honesty in the )ublic service; to restore the old reverent feeling with which men entered upon the duty of official life; to justify to all people patriotic pride in the economy, the and integrity of every man who acts in the nations name; to place as near as possible all classes of producers and all industries of the country upon a basis of equality under the laws; to guard infant industries against desrtuction from abroad and against destructive domestic annihilation; to make tariff laws whose duties shall represent the difference between the wages of this country and the wages of other countries instead of laws which ignore the wage question and represent the difference between an honest industry and one capitalized at fifteen times its original cost; to relieve the country of the existing panic; to take from favored banks the immense surplus deposited there, and to expend that surplus in the beneficent and legitimate works of government and then to cease extracting from the pockets of the people more money than the honest costs of government; and finally, summing up a great policy, to turn the rascals out of public office, and to turn the trusts out of their control of government. an-agoni- - com-jeten- cy Mr. Jacob H.
