Show DAILY UTAH 4 UTAH STATE JOURNAL OGDEN, UTAH. FRANK J. CANNON. EDITOR. OGDEN, THE GATEWAY. Ogden is the center of the land of gold spikes and silver hammers. Nearly a genera-tio- n ago some of the great men of country stood on a bleak sage brush plateau, the summit of Promontory Hill, and united the two oceans by driving with a silver hammer the last spike one of gold which joined the first transcontinental line. Tomorrow another gold spike will be driven to effect the union of which at fabuthe rails on the Lucin Cut-of- f, lous expense has been constructed to avoid the travel across that same great Promontory Hill. Every blow upon the first gold spike was a pean of praise that civilization had come. Every blow upon the gold spike of tomorrow will be a note of triumph that civilization remains and is forever advancing. In the day when the Promontory spike was driven great things were done by great men as individuals. Today great things are done by great aggregations of men. We have lost something of the gigantic man, and in his place is the gigantic combination of men. What is lost to the world of individual splendor is given back in the way pf vaster splendor of achievement by the methods which have come to their greatest height in the United States within twenty years past. Whether the change is a beneficial one or not it is needless now to discuss. Mr. Ilarriman and his cohorts representing mastery of railway and financial interests, are welcomed within the gates of this great city. The first golden spike gave to Ogden a world's fame. Tomorrow s golden spike will confirm that fame to us for all time to come. When Mr. Ilarriman swings his silvered hammer tomorrow he will be fullfilling a prophecy. Thirty years ago Brigham Young made a deed to the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railway companies of the lands which they now occup on the western side of this city. In that deed he declared that Ogden should be the permanent junction of the two roads. The spike of tomorrow is the golden answer that the prediction is forever secure. Ogden is the Gateway through which must pass the magnificences of both East and West. Morgan has thus been compelled to abdicate. From this day on, like the lesser slaves, Morgan will be dragged at the chariot wheels of the all conquering one of finance. Nor does the above statement fully show the present discrepancy between the fortunes and control of the two magnates. With one exception all the Rockefeller stocks stand far above par in the market, while many of the Morgan stocks are below par. Further, every one of the Rockefeller stocks pays big dividends while some of the Morgan stocks pay none. With this overmastering lead in this country Mr. Rockefeller may be expected to extend his lines to financial circles in Europe and in all probability he will take away from Morgan the crown of dictatorship in international banking, as he has already wrested from him the sceptre of industrial and financial control in the United States. Truly John Rockefeller is genius of the lamp the coal oil lamp. ken only from the public record of President McKinley, and not from knowledge of his private views.
