AN OPEN LETTER. n The very peculiar and unusual existing in Utah today, a condition which has led up to the official investigation of the religious life and belief of a member of the United States Senate, is receiving the attention of the whole nation. Whether or not the life, practices or religious beliefs of Senator Smoot are such as to Justly occasion the atention that it has received. we do not care to discuss, further than to say, in a general way, that we think it all rot; but the state of Utah is suffering immeasureable ills because of it, and any circumstance which is calculated to strengthen the main argument against Senator Smoot that of church influence" in politics if brought about by anything approaching public will and influence, will have a tendency to further besmirch the good name of the state and widen the breach which the vexed question has occasioned in the ranks of the dominant party. The election of a United States senator by the incoming Legislature is a matter of more than ordinary Importhave it ance. They, the, .Leghtur ' ranks and breach in the make it impossible to elect another Republican to prominent place in the state, by naming a man whom rumor has associated with the objectionable element; or on the other hand, to heal ihe breach and cement together on the line of fraternal good will and legitimate ambition, the contending factions. by electing a man whom no faction claims and all factions honor; a man whom the state and the nation can accept as having been elected as a legitimate and worthy representative of the Republican party. The name of Hem. George Sutherland has been continuously and persist ently held forth as the choice of the Church element for senator; the domi-natioof the Btate Republican convention was made possible only through the Influence which this tacit understanding afforded; factions were created and party splits lnagu rated by the boldness of the plan; impetus was given tQ the hue and cry arainst Utah by the success of the Church programme 'up to election day. It does not matter now whether or not Church influence is or has been used; whether Mr. Sutherland is or is not the choice of the Mortnon church; the indications and impressions are so strong that his election at this time would mean the downfall of the Republican party, if not the total annihilation of all party politics in the state. Party loyalty, coupled with love for President Roosevelt. held the party together at the last election; but the fire had Just been kindled, ad a little more fuel to the flames and loyalty will be in too much demand locally to admit of its use abroad. There Is st least one man in Utah whose party affiliations and official and political conduct hare been such as to place him above the bickerings of ward heelers and factional bosses and beyond the reach of such Influences as money and church can wield. Twice of the , elected to the Supreme bench state. Chief Justice George W. Bartch can be elected without fear of con seen cnees. No man can ever say that Mr. Bartch was elected through any deal with anybody. If elected, it will to because the Legislature have In mind tbe welfare of the state and a desire that the dignity, honor and pres-t'g- e of the Republican party be maintained. Dignity can be upheld only by a complete divorce from factional hosslsm: honor assured by discarding everything savoring of disloyal and dishonest Jobbery; and the prestige of the party restored by a display of American independence in the selection of a United States senator. n old-tim- - NOTARY PUBLIC, v W.
