' Oil showings in well No. 1 of the Western Venture corporation near Vernal have increased at every foot since the first showing was made December 9, according to Frank R. Neigh, veteran driller, who arrived in Ogden Wednesday. While we have only drilled 12 feet since we first entered the oil sands, Mr. Neigh said, the showings were more pronounced, especially at the last taro feet of the bore. Mr. Neigh, after spending more than a year at the well, arrived in Ogden to confer with the company officials before leaving for Casper, Wyoming, to spend Christmas with his family and to confer with leading oil men in that section, where he formerly served as field superintendent for the New York Oil company in the Salt Creek district. Our next problem is to shut out the water in the casing," Mr. Neigh continued. The casing is now lowered to a depth of 1266 feet, but it will be necessary to lower it to the bottom of the hole at 1282 feet in order to shut out the water. The casing has been kept within close distance with the drilling in anticipation of entering the oil sands. Drilling will be continued as soon as the water is shut out, and much faster progress will be possible. The Western Venture well is located a half mile further back from the outcropping of oil sands than the old Reed well which was struck in 1913 by R. E. Reed of California. The oil zone was entered at that time at a depth of 788 feet, which was declared not deep enough to produce a gusher. Oil was pumped from the well at the rate of about 350 barrels a day, but the project was abandoned at the death of Mr. Reed. Striking the oil sands at a depth of 1270 feet, the Western Venture well bears out the experience in similar fields in California, where large wells have been brought in past the 1000-fomark, according to Edward R. Lovell, geologist of the company. The oil sands were encountered at about the point calculated from the formations of the district, which also show that the oil zone is approximately 500 feet thick, Mr. Lovewell stated. Several geologists of local and national repute have worked with Mr. Lovewell in locating the Western Venture well. Among them are J. G. Lynn, professor of geology at Weber college!' Prof. Earl Douglas of the University of Utah; J. D. Owen, geologist of the Southern Pacific, railroad; Christian Vrang, consulting geologist of Salt Lake City, and J. S. Sur, well known geologist who discovered the Lance Creek oil district in Wyoming. Mr. Neigh stated Thursday, just before leaving for Wyoming, that the showings made on entering the oil sands were the most promising in his drilling experience in many oil fields from Pennsylvania to California. He recommended a control head being placed on the grounds to top the casing when the well comes in. IVESTOCK SHOW f Reductions 5fj m Twelve Feet of Drilling Since First Showing Was Made at r. .
