Show Davis County Clipper Tuesday. May 13 Writers host Bell as Aunt Patty Sessions The Bountitul Chapter of the League of Utah W riters is honored Elouise Bell is no ordinary woman. For the past several years, she has long and colorful life, facing physical danger, the emotional upheaval of living in polygamy, and the hardship of making a living on the rugged frontier. Her descendants, some of whom first settled Bountiful, number in the thousands. In "Aunt Patty Remembers." Professor Bell, now retired from the of faculty Brigham Young University, diamaties highlights of Patty Sessions' life. Bell has been performing this play thioughout the west since 1989, and. during Utah's Centennial Celebration, has taken "Aunt Patty" to every coiner of the state under the sponsorship of the Utah Humanities Council. "Aunt Patty Remembers" is a journey back in time to an April evening of 1865 in Bountiful. In her play, one-woma- n Elouise Bell assumes the character of Patly Bartlett Sessions, pioneer midwife and business woman, and weaves stories of her colorful life and times. She regales hei "family" (the audience) with accounts of her escape from bloodthirsty mobs, her crossing of the plains, her relation- ships with Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and her challenges At as an 19th century paia-medi- the conclusion of her narrative. Aunt Patty answers questions from her "family." In this Sesquicentennial year, it is fortunate to be able to welcome Piofessor Bell into the community to hear Aunt Patty relate some of the high points of her rental kable life. Patty Bartlett Sessions diary, along with those of several other outstanding women from the pioneer past, is being published as part of the sesquicentennial calendar of events. Patty's diary will be coming off the Utah Stale University Press later this month. Elouise Bell is Prolessor Emeritus of English and former ELOUISE BELL Associate Dean of General and Honors Education at Brigham Young University, where she taught from She has also taught at the University of Arizona, the University of Massachusetts, and at Berzenyi College in Hungary. A 196-199- sampling of her publications include essays, reviews, stories, and poems in such periodicals as English Journal. Women's Studies Quarterly, BYU Studies Networks Dialogue Sunstonc. and the Ensign. She currently writes a weekly commentary column for The Salt Lake Tribune. A collection of her essays. Only When I Laugh, was published by Signature Books. Bell is a popular speaker throughout the state and intermountain region on women's issues, humor and creative writing. The Bountiful Chapter of the League of Utah Writers is happy to be able to sponsor Elouise Bell as she Patty presents "Aunt Remembers." This program is not typical of most of the League of l'tah Writers programs, in that it is not specifically aimed at writers. Because Professor Bell's presentation is based upon the prolific journals of a great pioneer lady, Patty Bartlett Sessions, it will be of great interest to anyone who is captivated by early Pioneer History. Patty Sessions is the mother of Bountiful's first settler, Perrigrine Sessions. Both she and Perrigrine are buried in the Bountiful Cutler named to UACPA post Cemetery. This program is provided by the Utah Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is open to the public without charge. Ford, Bountiful resident, was elected second vice president on the National Board of development for the national interfaith organization. Marcia has been active in AMI for twenty years. She has served as president of both the Washington and Utah Associations, newsletter editor, cultural arts chairman, and convention chairman.
