April 18 Mueller Park Junior Highs Utah Center Education for Families in We have spoken with a good number of students at college and high school who, when asked why they are doing what they are doing, replay that they are doing it because it is what their parents want them to do. For example, they might be a premedical student or determining that being a building contractor is what they want to do in life because their father was a doctor or they knew' someone they admired that was a building contractor. This is a judgment for good reason. Sometimes however, our kids are doing things because we tend to put some pressure on their choices w hen they are not in agreement w ith ours. For example, the son of one of our program specialists decided at one point he wished to play the piano. His father was delighted because he himself was a piano player his son, therefore, was following in his own footsteps. The son ended up practicing less than regularly and eventually quit. The lp 451-110- cards, Saturday. May 17 Centervilles Fashion Heritage Silhouettes Through History will be presented on Saturday, May 17 at p.m. in the Centerville City Hall Council Room. Fashions from 1848 to 1948 will be displayed following the Fashion Show until 3 show is part of p.m. The Preservation Week. father was disappointed, to say the least. A few months later, the son indicated he would like to play the trumpet. The father, disgusted after the son had quit the piano, said he wouldnt even consider the possibility. After all, he had seen what had happened with the piano lessons. But later, he realized that his reluctance had less to do with the fact that the son had quit piano than it had to do with the fact that the father couldn't imagine a child of his playing the trumpet. It just didn't fit his image of his son. Fortunately, the father also realized that his feelings had a lot to do with his image of the son, but nothing to do with what was best for the son. The son started trumpet lessons and became successful in what he had seen as his goal. The point of this story, and many others like it, is simple. Parents need to find what is right for their children, not for their own impressions of what they had hoped their children would be or do. There w ill be frustrations as parents try things that dont work, but the ultimate reward will be their finding the right things that do work.
