Twice this season the Utah Jazz have won fifteen straight games. The longest winning streaks in franchise history; the longest winning streaks in the NBA this year. Fifteen. In the first round of the playoffs you must win three games to advance to the second round. In the second and third rounds you must win four games to advance to the NBA finals. Friday, April 9 Jazz 104, Houston Rockets 83 The Jazz had already clinched home court advantage through the 344415, tell. With a 100-- 98 Jazz loss to the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday, Utah saw its second 15 game win streak of the season stopped, this time on national television. The Jazz failed for the first time in franchise history to sweep the Lakers, but still hold a 3- -1 edge over LA for the 8, year. The Jazz, dropped their 1 8th game of the season after holding at 17 losses for 32 days from Mar. 11 to April 13. Utah now has another chance to set a new mark for wins in a season tonight at Phoenix then host a pair of games before finishing on the road Sunday. Sunday, April 13 Los Angeles Lakers 100, Jazz 98 The Jazz were not embarrassed by the Lakers, but dropped a game they might have won nonetheless. Utah committed costly turnovers and gave up 17 offensive rebounds to the Lakers to lose the seesaw battle. The lead changed hands over two dozen times with the Jazz tying the score for the final time on a Karl Malone jump shot with 10 seconds to go. But Shaquille ONeal hit a tough turnaround jump shot at the horn to ice LAs victory. It was the second time in three days Los Angeles had cooled off one of the NBAs hottest teams. On Friday the Lakers had snapped Phoenixs 1 1 game winning streak. Los Angeles got a big performance from its big man, ONeal, who scored 39 points in his second game back from the injured list. Meanwhile, Utah got subpar performances from Malone who hit just eight of 19 shots and grabbed just four rebounds, Bryon playoffs and the Rockets were saying the significant game for them was Sundays game against Seattle which would help settle the issue of second place in the conference. So Friday nights match-u- p between the two divisional rivals didnt really mean anything. Yeah, right. It just looked like the entire future of civilization was at stake. While these two teams respect one another, they dont necessarily 60-1- like one another. Following the end of the game, it took a long time for Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich to compose himself enough to meet with the media. When he was finally ready to talk, he made it clear from the start that the games officiating was a taboo subject. Those things happen. Ill just say that some of those things (fouls) were so obvious-tho- se fouls against Olajuwon, I just dont know what he has to do. Charles Barkley, who isnt given to subtlety, made the Rockets feelings well known in his post game comments, but most of what he said was unprintable. The censured part went something like this: It was like 10 on 5 out there. These guys were (trying to come up with the Three Stooges), ah...Tom, Dick and Harry. If Utah gets officiating like that, theyre going to win the West. Of course, you expect that when you come here. Although Barkley and the officiating crew were at odds much of the night, Barkley stuck around until there was just under two minutes to go in the game before earning his second technical foul and automatic ejection. Hakeem Russell and Greg Ostertag who got just one point each in the second half, and Jeff Homacek who finished the game with just seven Olajuwon and Kevin Willis also got special citations in a game that deteriorated into a verbal brawl. When asked for his comments, Willis diplomatically said, Im going to keep it to myself. Said Olajuwon, I touch someone and get a foul. Im being killed by two of three guys, no call. I dont understand. Houstons opinion of the officials seemed to be the focus of the Rockets attention in the final game was secondary. But in truth, the Rockets had other problems. For instance, the Jazz led by 10 points less than four period-t- he minutes into the game, long before the Rockets ran afoul of the law. Utah led by 10 points after one period. Houston had the shots to challenge for the lead, but the shots wouldnt drop for the Rockets. They shot 30 percent on the night and Olajuwon didnt score his first basket until the 10:24 mark of the second period and it narrowed the Jazz lead back to 10 points, 2. He finished the game at 50 32-2- percent, better than most of his teammates. Barkley was three of 11, Clyde Drexler two of 15, Willis three of 9 and Jazz killer Eddie Johnson hit three of his 10 shots. The Jazz shot far worse than their season average of 50 percent, but started strong and stayed strong enough to control the contest. Houston got within five points in the second period and seven in the third but in the conclusive final quarter the closest they would come was 1 1, Game highlights: Jazz: Shooting: Fg Ft 77.8, 3 pt 84-- 73. 41.2, 37.5.
