Salt Lake Community College Athletic Director Norma Carr and businessman Ron Osborn all received special awards at the gala in Salt Lake City which cele brated 100 years of Utah s Greatest Sports Memories " The event was held in conjunction with Utah's Centennial Winners were cnosen by public vote and a selection committee Salvo received the prestigious award as Best Women s College Athlete from Utah She was an All American at the University of Utah in basketball She also excelled in volley ball and track and field Her counterpart on the men's side was lim McMahon of BYU Carr won two awards She was honored as top contributor to Utah high school womens athletics and as top contributor in officiating Osborn, owner of Ozzie's 30 Minute Photo in Bountiful and Farmington, won the amateur coach of the century award Osborn received his award after Utah Jazz great Karl Malone received an award as best professional to play in Utah, and before Jim McMahon received his award as top collegiate player from Utah I've always loved sports and played sports as a kid, he said Osborn began coaching amateur athletics at age 16 and never let up He coached soccer, baseball, basketball, football and ladies softball In 1977 he coached the first Utah ladies slow pitch team to ever advance to a national tournament In 1985 at age 38 he became the youngest inductee into the Utah State ASA Hall ol Fame for administrative and coaching a comphshments Osborn said he is also proud of his accomplishments as Farmington City s first recieation director, a position he held for 12 years Everything we did was a first," he said For me, I was the guy who was in the right spot at the right time who got all the breaks The most significant thing I've done and like to think still do, is surround myself with good people If you do that, you're bound to be successful sooner or later "I've spent the past 30 years doing what I love to do During those 30 years I ve learned from the participants much more than I've taught I ve gained something from each of those I've associated with It hasn't been a paid profession for me so I've been able to truly enjoy it without the pressures that go along with an occupation, Osbom said 1 RON OSBORN For the past 30 years Osborn has been an administrator, coach and participant in amateur athletics in Davis County and throughout the state He has personally coached more than 200 teams and 3 000 athletes during his career including many who were honored at the gala celebration Lon Salvo i Merlin Olsen selected Athlete of the Century 100 Years Award winners at Oct 21st Sports Memories at Abravanel Hall of Utahs Greatest Mens Division Coach Vadal Peterson Old-TiCoach Amie Femn Contributor Marv Jensen Amateur Coach Ken Price Amateur Athlete: Doug Borg High School Athlete. There was no rhyme or reason behind the policy. she said It wasn't an easy battle to get some of these sports sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association Girls could participate with boys in tennis, but for some reason they could not qualify for the state tournament," she said This was at the start of the equal rights era and we had some long and ugly battles We had both men and women fighting against interscholastic women's competition among high schools," Carr said Sometimes I was berated for taking gym time away from the men, she said We were treading on sacred ground Carr said female athletes have made tremendous progress as opportu-- ! nines increase She said women were known for lack of stamina and it was thought that participating in athletics would make them too masculine When we first started playing basketball we played with three offensive see HEROES pg.
