On the road and in Vancouver, to play the Canadians they won the first game by a score of 3 to 2 over the Canadians. But after this first road win the Buzz proceeded to lose the next four games, including the first played in Calgary against the Cannons. But the Buzz are still in first place with a 6 record. That first road game was won by Todd Walkers sacrifice fly ball which scored Brian Raabe from third base in the sixth inning. The others are Minneapolis and San Antonio. This is significant victory for all of Utah. It is but one of many this winter with the opening of supplemental benefits derived programs underway at Bear Hollow and the Oquirrh Park speedskating oval in Kearns. Under the auspices of the Park City based National Sports Foundation, some 80 youngster are participating in serious development programs in from the capital city being named host of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and it comes on the heels of the first anniversary of the city obtaining the honor last June. The designation as an Olympic Development Center means Salt Lake is destined to become a major player in the development of Olympic caliber athletes in winter sports. The USOC program brings with it an annual budget of $250,000 for 1997 to 2000. This money is for the pur- pose of enhancing grassroots development in designated sports while also providing opportunities for interested youngsters to develop at the intermediate level, according to USOC, The USOC has committee to provide leadership and develop partnerships via this program and plans shortly to name a director of youth sports development who will work with the three program cities to select state coordinators. They, in turn, will work with Sport Governing Bodies to establish plans and agendas for each center. The USOC will implement its Level 4 dmt.
