It is a simple and safe sys-ttem. , Tim and I were hiking through the quaking aspen when I saw a , point so the day was not without its share of shooting. Our group had a 28 percent success rate, which is just about where hunter was anticipated to be this ' ' year. Even though we didnt tag a deer, the day was not without its memorable events. This is die first time that Tim, my youngest son, was able to carry a rifle. I outfitted him with an H&R Single shot Handi-Rifl- e that is chambered to shorn a .243 bullet. He practiced at the range on Friday afternoon, and Tim commented over and over how he was to have a gun that didnt kick. The Handi-Rifl- e may be the ideal Starter gun for a young hunter- - It costs considerably less than a holt action rifle, has inter- changeable barrels so that the shooter can graduate to a larger caliber for bigger game, and is a pleasure to cany in the field The single shot rifle breaks open like a shotgun and the shooter must cock the hammer before firing a Tim quickly recovered, reloaded, and reminded himself where the barrel release was and where the hammer was on the rifle. He survived his first case of buck fever, and much to his relief, we got a good look at the deer and identified it as a doe, My sons and I spent die ing pushing through the trees and draws. All of os saw deer, beauti- fill country, and got some great exercise- - Now we are ready for some serious burning. We will be back at it early Saturday morning, with die rest of the hunters who did not fill their tags. There are still plenty of deer in the mountains, but we are going to have to work to find one, If the hunting gets too hard, I do know where there is one point buck. When my son, Marie, went out to take care of his pets early Tuesday morning, there was a deer feeding on die remains of my garden. Mark shined the beam of his flashlight at the deer, and caught a glimpse of its antlers before it bounded up the hill. If all of our efforts dont pay off, we may just have to resort to hunting in my backyard. After all, weve seen more bucks there than we saw in the mountains. mom-succe- ss two-pleas- ed |
