An ESPN sports specialist reported a crazed Baltimore fan had instructed his wife that should he die before Ripkin broke the Gehrig mark, he was not to be buried until the new record had been established. they are Gehrig and Ripkin true baseball heroes. Youd have thought the second coming was nigh as Baltimore and its environs went utterly crazy. It was all because their baseball hero. Cal Ripkin, surpassed the consecutive game record set by the immortal Lou Gehrig in 1939. September 6, 1995 will be emblazoned in baseballs sacred record books for on this day the dependable and classy shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles. Cal Ripkin, eclipsed the long standing Gehrig record of 2,130 games without a miss. When Gehrig made the mark sports pundits predicted it would never be broken. diaAs usual the mond authorities once again were proved wrong. But what about Lou Gehrig? As a young lad sitting in the old Sportsmans Park in St. Louis on Aug. 17, 1933, I watched the crowning of Gehrig as the new consecutive game champion. He had just pushed by the mark held, as I recollect, by Everett Scott. He, with Babe Ruth, established the first, and unquestionably the greatest, home run hitting duo in baseball history. Gehrigs consecutive game record began on June 1, 1925 and ended May 2. 1939 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Even with his great accomplishments on the baseball field, he is better known today for the debilitating muscle affliction named after him, Lou Gehrigs Disease. The crippling ailments official name is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALC). Ripkin, a clean-livin- g young man, as was Gehrig, has high ideals and praiseworthy work ethics and has kept himself in top physical condition as he survived the punishing schedules to play in every game. Playing his entire career with the Orioles, Ripkin has performed under a variety of managers including his father and has never once been critical of Oriole leaders. He just went out and did his job every day. Because he is a skilled shortstop and a consistently top hitter, it was necessary for him to be in the game daily if the Orioles were to have a chance to win. Interesting is the fact that both Gehrig and Ripkin survived the bumps and bruises, pulled muscles, back pains, broken fingers.
