The six boys and 13 girls ranging in age from 15 to 17 are from southern Japan. After their intensive look at western U.S. culture here they will family for three weeks, the teenagers get a real taste of life for their counterparts in the United States. They have a variety of experiences like going to the movies, camping, swimming and shopping. Before they lease the students will also go to Lagoon and the Festival of the American West in Logan. This is an annual tour that teenagers can sign up for through the Pacific American Institute. One tour always comes to Utah. Other tours visit other parts of the country. In many ways, their life in Japan spend three more days in Los Angeles where they will visit Disneyland and Universal Studios. The teenagers have had many different experiences. One of their most enjoyable was a visit to Cherie Goodlifes Rainbow Preschool where they heard a special talk on American cowboys and Indians from Mrs. Goodlife and then had a chance to try their skills at some is quite different from the way teenagers live here. For example. April, not September, is considered to be the month of new beginnings because that is the month that students are advanced to the next grade level. It is also the month that companies lake in new employees. In Japan junior high school go to school about 243 days a stu-den- ls year while high school students attend 215 days. In the United states junior high and high school students only attend an average of 80 days of school. Students take classes similar to those taught in the United States. In Japan students often struggle with Japanese in the same way students here often struggle with the finer points of English. However, schools 1 also provide time during the afternoon for interested students to pre- pare for Sports Days and other school events. More importantly, at the end of the school day. the students spend ten minutes in class meetings and then take turns doing a cleanup of classrooms and school grounds. Japanese students are required to wear uniforms at most junior high and high schools in Japan. Boys p collar jackets and girls wear sailor blouses or blazers and skirts.
