Shorts1 By Mark Watson Sports Editor If Scott WEST BOUNTIFUL Hailes were to put away his golf clubs and call it quits for the summer, he still would have enough tournament victories to fill a trophy case. The MAREN BURBIDGE Bountiful skater wins gold Maren Burbidge of Bountiful brought the gold medal home from the prestigious Skating Figure Lake Championships in Arrowhead. Calif., held July 24-3- 0 at the Ice Castle International Training Center. Competing in the Novice Ladies division, Maren placed second in the Technical program and first in the Freestyle, combined for an golfer from West Bountiful has enjoyed a stranglehold on the competition this summer. He has won three junior tournaments and three mens amateur tournaments in Utah this year. Two weeks ago in Fargo, N.D. he pulled off one of his biggest triumphs ever by winning the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. In the final match he won three of the last six holes to beat James Driscoll of Chestnut Hill, Mass. Its a remarkable feat, considering Hailes had to win two qualify- ing matches and then six more matches against the top junior playHe edged Farmington friend and rival Boyd Summerhays in the early rounds. In a national tournament in Boise last week. Hailes fired a 65 to help his Utah contingent to a fourth-plac- e finish. Its been a great summer. I go to Chris Jones and Mike Bicker when I have putter problems, he said. e Hailes has a golf scholto next play at Wright year arship State in Dayton, Ohio. After a year of college golf he plans to go on a mission for the LDS Church. I talked with the local colleges but they werent willing to give me a full-rid- e scholarship. Wright States coach is the only one that gave me a chance, Hailes said. The West Bountiful golfer has focused on his golf career. He played high school basketball his sophomore and junior years, but opted not to play his senior season. I didnt like what was going on with the basketball program. I wasnt playing," he said. The U.S. Junior Junior Amateur win earned Hailes a berth in the U.S. Amateur later this month in Rhode Island, but he probably will not attend because of previous commitments and the expense of traveling to the event. Then its off to the Maxfli PGA junior tourney in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. on the afternoon of the final round of the Utah Open. West Jordan had finished the 0 Valley League season with an record and had to win three games in the brutal to get into the tournament as the eighth place entrant, and it was suspected that their pitching was shot. But Johnny Ortiz, a slim left hander who threw a lot of pitches in the dirt, had Viewmont hitters off stride all day long and when it looked like the Davis County team might rally, Doug Allred, a right hander came in and shut them down. McEwan Bender led off the second with a single but was erased on a double play after which John Wight flew out to end the inning. Cort Beckman led off the third by drawing a walk, but was forced at second on a grounder to third by Kevin Lindsey. Then came a most unusual play. Lindsey made an attempt to steal second with Brad Kurtz swinging to protect the runner. The home plate ump, however, ruled that Kurtz had interfered with the catchers throw and he was ruled out with Lindsey being sent back to first. Lindsey then stole second legally but the inning ended on a strikeout. Beckman was in trouble in the fourth as a single, a fielders choice and a ground out put a runner at sec- ond with two out. Again Bateman caused trouble with a hard liner to right but Jake Fisher charged it and threw on a line to get the sliding runner at home. Viewmont cut the margin to 1 in the bottom of the fourth w hen w ith two out. Bender got his second hit of the day, this one into right and Steve Rice followed with a hit to the same spot. Drew Wight walked but the next batter flew out to end the threat. After the first two men got on base, 2-- Beckman bore down and got three straight outs in the fifth and in the and Steve Jeppson hit one up the middle to bring in Kurtz and tie it at two. In came Allred for Ortiz and the right hander promptly struck out the next two batters. Beckman ran into trouble promptly in the sixth when a single, a hit batsman, another single loaded up the bases and another one put out, Shaun Taylor singled in two and Chet Wall brought in the fifth one w ith a long sacrifice fly to center. The game w as over for all practical purposes as Allred set Viewmont down in order in both the sixth and seventh. Viewmont got only five hits, with Bender getting two, and were hurt especially by no one in the lower part of the batting order hitting safely. receive a specially designed for this event by Fruit Heights resident Brett Jones.
