A The show, entitled, Marvelous Work and a Wonder A prophet Remembered, will air Monday, June 27 at 9 p.m. (EDT), according to Leon A. Davies, coordinator of VISN programming for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. It will be narrated by Bill Turpie, correspondent for VISN television specials. The show will pay tribute to Joseph Smith, first prophet and president of the Church. He was shot to death on June 27, 1844, in the obscure village of Carthage, Illinois, where he had been placed in the local jail house for protection from enemies of the Church he had organized 14 years before. A mob stormed the jail and killed both Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum. Joseph Smith had organized the Church in western New York state after a series of heavenly visions and the publication of the Book of Mormon, a volume of ancient Saints scripture used by Latter-da- y alongside the Holy Bible. The prophets teachings of continuing revelation and new scripture went against the grain of tra- - ditional beliefs, however, and he and his followers were driven from New York to Ohio to Missouri and to Illinois, where they built the city of Nauvoo from swampland. They built homes, shops and a sacred temple in their Mississippi River settlement, and Nauvoo at its zenith became a thriving community of about 12,000, rivaling Chicago in size. Joseph Smith served on the city council and eventually became mayor. In addition, he commanded that the answer to that interrogatory may be thus written: Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet. Although Nauvoo grew and prospered, persecutions eventually Saints resumed and the Latter-da- y were ultimately driven from Illinois as well.
