Show By SUSIE DAVIS Contributing Writer The place of the father in the modern suburban family is a very small one, particularly if he plays Bertrand Russell once golf, quipped. Just as with mothers, fathers are stereotyped. Some stereotypes are seeing fathers as companions to their children spending time fishing, golfing, doling out wisdom, and providing for their families. These are worthy goals, but what are men really like? We gift gifts at Fathers Day, but what about the gift of understanding? So much is said about the challenge of motherhood. Fatherhood is just as challenging. Bill Cosby calls it sweet insanity. With children, he says, life is like the Marines, be prepared, financially that is. One subtitle to a chapter in his book Fatherhood, is To the Poorhouse with a Smile. Other chapters are Dr. Spock Never Promised Us a Rose Garden, The First Parent Had Trouble Too, Shes Got the Whole World in Her Glands. So much has been written about mothers. Fathers are great too. This Fathers Day, give the gift of understanding. it is not that one sex is better or worse than the other. It is simply that they . are different. ' Dr. Joyce Brothers Many women want equality on the same basis as men, but there are major differences in the way men and women think, react, and perform. We can be equal in our intrinsic worth, but men and women are each very diverse. According to Dr. Joyce Brothers, It is not that one sex is better or worse than the other. It is simply that they are different. If we can understand these differences and learn to use them creatively, all of us would be happier with ourselves and with others...these are differences not equality and inequality. Some of the differences are culturally determined, others genetically. Dr. Brothers lists some of the major differences between men and women. Men change their minds more often than women. They snore more. And they fight more. They have thicker skins and longer vocal cords. According to her, their blood is redder, their daylight vision is better, their metabolic rate is higher and more of them are left handed. Their immunity against disease is weaker, they talk about themselves less and they worry about themselves more. And they are less sensitive to others than women. Culture has dictated what we expect from men. We expect perfor- - DADS CAN BE GREAT NOT PERFECT: Just as with mothers, fathers are stereotyped. Athletics are a big in the lives of men and boys, consequently, winning, performing, and succeeding are stressed. In current magazines it is interesting to note that we see articles about men and financial success, men and athletic performance, men and managing money. Very few articles are directed to men getting along with families, or coworkers, or about relationships at all. Women seem to feel that the proper study of woman is woman and the more a woman knows about herself and others the better she will -- Dr. Deborah Tannert Physiologically, the differences between men and women are great. Besides the obvious, one of the differences that impacts lives is that men have 20 percent more red blood cells. That means they get more oxygen and have more energy. Men have more muscle power because 41 percent of a mans body is muscle compared to 35 percent for a woman. The higher percentage of muscle to fat makes it easier for men to lose weight. On the other hand, women sweat more efficiently because their sweat glands are distributed more evenly cant just over their bodies which causes them to cool off faster. Women have more energy reserves than men because they have fat tucked away in nooks and crannies which provides a rich energy reserve, according to Brothers. Dr. Deborah Tannen says, Men see the world as an individual in a hierarchical social order in which he was either one up or one down. In this world, conversations are negotiations in which people try to achieve and maintain the upper hand if they can, and protect themselves from others attempts to put them down and push them around. Life, then, is a contest, a struggle to preserve independence and avoid failure. Women approach the world as an individual in a network of connections. To women, conversations are negotiations people Men are inclined to resist orders, especially from a woman. Men like women in subordinate roles because it gives them status. Problems are problems to men. They fix the car and the emotions. (trying) to seek and give confirmation and support, reach consensus, and protecting themselves from others trying to push them away. Hierarchies are more of friendship than of power and accomplishment. Tannen points out, Men want to be independent and free to act upon their own. Men feel oppressed by lengthy discussions about what they see as minor decisions and feel hemmed in if they act without talking first. Men feel oppressed by lengthy discussions about what they see as minor decisions and feel hemmed in if they cant just act without talking first -- Dr. Deborah Tannen The basic differences are enlightening. Men and women are different no matter how much some would like to change the fact. For this reason we have fathers who are good providers, who can make decisions without always becoming too emotional about them, who give us security because of their strength, and who let the mothers take care of what they simply dont and cant understand.
