After years of somewhat quiet service, Hicken stumbled into the spotlight Sunday. Move over Madonna, Dennis Rodman, Mt Mutombo and Larry H. Miller, Hicken has arrived. ROCKET SCIENTIST: Houston forward Robert Horry after his teams win over the Jazz Sunday: Their 80-7- Outdoors season has arrived first official weekend of has past, and lor the three months thousands of Utahns will enjoy the great outdoors. In doing so. we will suiter numerous insect bites, sunburns, sore muscles, scrapes, scratches, bumps, bruises and other minor injuries. Sounds fun doesn't it1 Of course, being outdoois doesnt have to hurt. Most of the above can be prevented with a little forethought and preparation. Lets start with insects. The mosquito abatement agencies are reporting that the eaily warm and wet spring is going to provide a bumper crop of mosquitoes. These pesky critters are going to thiive and feast on those who happen to be outdoors. To avoid the nutation begin with a good insect repellent. The most effective repellents contain the chemical called DEBT. Insect repellents can be applied to clothing and directly on exposed skin Be aware that DEET can be absoibed through the skin, so only use what you need Be purticulaily cautious when using with children If you prefer a moie natural repellent, consider one that contains citronella. I have used Nalrapel, by the Tender Corporation, with good success. It is also excellent for use on children Be aware that it isnt as long lasting as products containing DEET, but it is fine for an evening outdoors. When the bugs bite, you can reduce the irritation by using After Bite, also manufactured by the Tender Corp. This treatment contains a formula of ammonia hydroxide and mineral oil. It is packaged in a pen-lik- e vial and is simple to apply to irritating bites. We usually keep a tube around the house when the mosquitoes are active and it solves numerous complaints from the kids about itchy bites. Sunburn is another hazard that comes from being outdoors. The simple solution is to use a sunscreen that has a high sun protection factor (SPF). I prefer sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher. The last time I fried my face while fishing on Deer Creek I decided that never again would I subject my skin to such torture. Since then I have carried sun The screen in the tackle box and in my fanny pack. If you get burned, there is nothing quite as soothing as aloe vera gel. Other solutions can help, such as a new product called Ahhh Sunburn Therapy, which contains aloe vera gel and lidocaine hydrochloride. But the best treatment is to avoid getting burned. The simplest solution to too much sun is to dress appropriately. Always wear a heat when going outdoors. A baseball cap is fine for protecting your face, but a hat that covers the ears and back of the neck is the best. I have taken to wearing when fishing long sleeves or hiking. These protect me from the bugs and sun, and are very comfortable in warm weather. To prevent sore muscles, get in shape before you try to conquer the highest peaks. The weather is nice enough to allow early morning walks or evening strolls. I have started my summer regimen of walking the foothills and have found that the winter has really gotten me out of shape. Of course riding a desk all week doesnt help any either. I started by hiking up a hill. The next morning, my legs told me they didnt think that was such a great idea. Since then the soreness has gone and the morning walks are more enjoyable. Our local varsity scout team is planning a backpacking trip into the Windriver Mountains later this summer and I am hoping to make the trip. I think that morning walks now will help considerably later in the summer. Many of the bumps, bruises, scrapes and minor injuries come Several 'Cals earn region honors of Mike Gonzalez Cyprus earned Most Valuable Player honors, but several Woods Cross Wildcats captured 7 recognition in a recent vote by Heath Davis, Brad Short, Jeremy league baseball coaches. The in thing in hiking is sports sandals, but for my feet, I want to have the protection of a sturdy pair of boots. Get the hiking boots that you are planning to wear on your extended outings and break them in while you are working in the" yard. It will save plenty of agony later. By wearing light colored clothing you can reduce the heat absorbed from the sun and keep away some of the insects. Long pants can prevent lots of scratches and bug bites, and long sleeve shirts really do save your arms. Finally, when you are going outdoors, always carry a first aid kit. They come in handy for all of those little accidents that seem to happen unexpectedly. I remember one family reunion when a young cousin cut his finger. It took quite awhile to find someone who had a band-ai- d to help out. Even a trip to the park can be a more pleasant experience if you are prepared. Being outdoors in the summer is fun. There is really no need to suffer for several days after your outdoor adventures.
